A thinktank recently claimed that tech companies might repeat the mistakes of tobacco giants if they ignore the threats of their products and services to mental health of today’s youth.
This thinktank urges the tech firms to create guidelines for the recommended daily use of their technology and expresses its views on the problem in the report published by the Strategic Society Centre, claiming that smartphone makers and social networks should consider how young people are affected by their businesses and take measures to prevent them from excessive usage by redesigning their products and services accordingly.
The report in question was produced in response to the previous research which found that chatting on social networks and game-console use were associated with higher chances of socio-emotional problems among teenagers. The suggestion was made that heavy use of mobile and gaming devices was also associated with lower levels of happiness among adolescents.
While rapidly evolving technologies benefit millions of people, including children, policymakers and companies should also be warned about the effects such technologies have on the wellbeing of some young people. Accordingly, the tech giants must actively engage with this issue. Perhaps, the government needs to educate young people in the classroom to understand how usage of such technology can influence their wellbeing – for instance, by making them feel inadequate next to the online lives presented by other children.
Thus, tech firms were urged to play a greater role in protecting their consumers. The Strategic Society Centre has drawn up recommendations that could help to improve the wellbeing of adolescents and compel tech firms to acknowledge their responsibilities, from national guidelines on the recommended amount of screen time teenagers should engage in each day to redesign of hardware and online experiences to ensure their wellbeing. Moreover, the Center also calls to develop compulsory school programs on how social networks and mobile technologies can affect children’s mental health.
In the meantime, the Strategic Society Centre came up with ideas that could help teenagers when using electronic media, for example, encouraging them to keep social media diaries in order to help “balance” their online and offline lives.
