Surprisingly enough, online piracy rate has significantly dropped in the country, for the first time in several years! It was noted that the drop coincides with the launch of Netflix, whose consumers admitted they are pirating less now and pointed at legal alternatives as the main reason.
Indeed, Netflix positions itself as one of the most prominent competitors to the pirate services, as it offers streaming of video content legally and at affordable price. Netflix also noticed consistent piracy drop in many countries soon after its launch, Australia being the most recent example. Netflix launched earlier in 2015 and fresh statistics show that online piracy has actually decreased over that period.
Now only 1/4 of Australian adults aged 18-64 are self-confessed pirates, as compared to 29% in 2014. The most important thing is that it is the first decrease since the piracy boom started. The drop was noticed among both casual and persistent pirates. Moreover, 40% of the remaining persistent pirates say they are pirating more than last year.
Industry watchers admit that in part the piracy decline can be attributed to the video streaming service, because the survey respondents admitted they pirated less due to availability of legal alternatives. They also mentioned moral considerations and legal ramifications. Still, legal options have the biggest impact according to the survey.
Online piracy has been a hot topic in the country. The government was planning to block websites and warn repeated infringers in the near future. It is yet to be seen whether this contributes to the continued downward trend.

They ate all our bandwidth and left none for the pirates.
At times, the network was so congested that I couldn't even log in to my seedbox
and torrents were running at 10 kb/s max. Uploads were 10x faster that downloads.
