According to the Metropolitan police, another young man was arrested as part of an investigation into the hacker attack on the UK telecoms company TalkTalk last month. The 18-year-old was taken into custody after police raided a property on Tuesday and was held at the police station accused of blackmail.
In frames of the same investigation, four other people were arrested earlier in UK: two 16-year-old teenagers, a 20-year-old man, and a 15-year-old boy from Northern Ireland. The latter was released just a few days ago. As for the cyber attack, it was the third in a spate of similar hacks targeting TalkTalk within the last 8 months. Of them, during incidents in August and February, TalkTalk customers’ data was stolen.
The Metropolitan police have issued a statement to confirm that the investigation is being carried out by its own cybercrime unit in cooperation with the PSNI’s cybercrime centre and the National Crime Agency.
In the meantime, TalkTalk’s CEO, Dido Harding, admitted it was still not clear to her how many of the company’s 4,000,000 British customers had been affected by the cyber-attack. The industry watchers and the security experts pointed out that the attack hit the website of the phone and broadband provider rather than its “core systems.”
At the same time, Jesse Norman, head of the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, is currently leading an inquiry into the alleged TalkTalk data breach. He revealed that officers are now in the process of investigating a ransom demand sent to TalkTalk by someone claiming to be responsible for the breach and seeking payment. However, TalkTalk announced it was not sure if the message was genuine in the first place.
