The Motion Pictures Association of America won a default judgment against the operators of MovieTube and a number of associated websites. The group has been awarded $10.5 million in statutory damages and control over several MovieTube domains that were shut down earlier in 2015.
Earlier this year, a number of movie studios filed a lawsuit against MovieTube and its affiliated sites operating from various domain names but by the same people. The lawsuit threatened site’s operators with millions of dollars in damages, but they never responded. All they did was taking down the targeted websites. As a result, the anti-piracy group requested a default judgment at the court, demanding a permanent injunction plus millions of dollars in damages, and won.
The court found MovieTube responsible for copyright violation, federal trademark counterfeiting and unfair competition, and agreed to total statutory damages for willful copyright infringement of $10.5 million. In addition, the default judgment also prohibited the site’s operators from offering or linking to any copyright infringing content, and transferred the ownership rights of all domain names to the movie studios.
The MPAA was happy with the outcome and claimed that such a ruling helped protect the livelihood of movie industry workers, as it ensures that the piracy websites stay down and won’t be used by other persons to continue massive copyright infringement. Although the acquisition of the MovieTube websites is a victory for the movie studios, it is doubtful that they will see any of the money of the awarded $10.5 million, since the true operators of the websites remain unknown.

|Im sure they were very pleased by it, they got everything they wanted.|
The only way it could have worked any better would have been if they wrote the script themselves. Thus providing a job for the writers guild.
