According to the latest reports, the Wi-Fi enabled Barbie doll can easily be hacked and turned into a surveillance device for spying on kids and listening into conversations. The doll is regarded as the first “interactive doll” in the world, which is able to listen to a human and respond via voice, like Apple’s Siri, Google’s Now and Microsoft’s Cortana.
Hello Barbie doll connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi and has a built-in microphone to record children and send that information off to 3rd-parties for processing before providing natural language responses. However, one security researcher discovered that when connected to Wi-Fi the toy was vulnerable to hijacking, allowing easy access to system information, account information, stored audio files and even direct access to the microphone.
The researcher explained that hackers could take that data and find out a doll’s owner’s house or business. Once he took control of where the information was sent, he clearly gained the snooping possibilities. Let’s start with the fact that the doll is supposed to only listen in on a conversation when a button is pressed. In addition, the recorded audio should be encrypted before being sent over the Internet. However, once a hacker obtained control of the doll, all the privacy features could be overridden.
It turned out that information stored by the toy could enable hackers to take over a home Wi-Fi network and subsequently gain access to other web-connected devices. This might have ended with the theft of personal data and caused other problems for the owners.
By the way, it’s not the first time that the doll has been placed under the privacy spotlight: back in March, privacy campaigners warned that the intimate conversations of a child with the doll were being recorded and analyzed.

|I saw this on the TV news and I usually dont much hear anything on it that is relevant to computer users. But this is something that could have been really bad if it had gone undetected. Kind of the same as allowing things from the net to have action over your computers A/V.|
Think about it. Someone listening when you are unaware.
