Facebook’s WhatsApp messaging app was blocked in the country, and the Brazilian users were unable to connect to service or send messages for 2 days. The blockade was set by a Brazilian court, which ordered mobile phone providers to block all access to the online messaging service for a total of 48 hours. This injunction was granted to a plaintiff by a criminal court in Brazil, though the identity of the claimant is not disclosed.
According to the first criminal court records, Facebook’s WhatsApp failed to respond to a court order handed down in July this year. As a result, next month the company was notified again of being subject to fixed penalty in case of non-compliance. Since the service failed to respond to the court orders, it urged the prosecution to request the blocking of services for 2 full days, based on the local law, and the Brazilian judge eventually granted the injunction.
The well-known messaging service accounts for over 900m daily active users all over the world – in Brazil alone, it has 93 million users. The statistics showed that at least 86% of Brazilians have used WhatsApp (although other studies estimate usage even higher – over 90%), which makes WhatsApp the most used app in the country above Facebook.
