Five pirates responsible for releasing thousands of movies online have been sentenced to a total of 17 years in the United Kingdom. The members of release groups were accused of "putting at risk" over £52 million in Hollywood revenues.
Almost three years ago, police raided 5 of the UK’s most prolific online movie pirates in the wake of an investigation by the local Federation Against Copyright Theft. All of them were arrested and by the beginning of this year had pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to defraud.
The anti-piracy outfit claimed that the infringement was huge – the groups had released over 9,000 movies online resulting in 5m unauthorized downloads. The defendants finally admitted causing the movie industry over £5 million in losses, about £1 million each. As a result, they were sentenced to 4 years and 6 months, 4 years and 2 months, twice 3 years and 6 months, and a 2 year suspended sentence. One of them aggravated his circumstances by continuing to pirate even while being on bail.
Moreover, the sentences would’ve been greater had the men not pleaded guilty early. Besides, there was also a penalty for the defendants who didn’t accept FACT’s version of events right away. It became known that the pirates who did not dispute anything would receive 1/3 knocked off their sentence, while the others would receive only 1/4. 2 of the pirates already had criminal records, but the others could eventually be moved to a low security prison.
This is the most aggressive private prosecution of the FACT to date, and it welcomed the court ruling. The outfit hopes that the result of the case sends out a serious message to other online pirates.

and extratorrent can sleep in their own beds at night "FACT will presume that the defendants’ actions “put at risk” at least £52,000,000 in studio revenues on ExtraTorrent alone."
Good on the Pirates Hollywood have not made a great film in years and if they are really losing money they would of stopped making movies years ago.I stopped paying for movies and CDs because why should I help the rich get richer while the poor get poorer and even then you don't have to be famous to be an actor or musician so why should i pay silly money just for attention seekers.Police are moaning about a pay cut well WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD.Its not about how much you get it's how you spend it and i don't believe for one minute they pay for CDs and DVDs that's why HMV shut down.
then i guess star wars isn't making money either... and neither did avatar.
the fact is, they are making up these losses, they are imaginary.
i've bought hundreds of dvds, and if i couldn't try a movie before i bought it, i'd never buy it.
and i would never go to the movie theatre for any reason, so they would never make anything off of me and millions of other people like me.
its the same exaggerations like when cassettes and scanners came out.
they know they usually make such garbage, that if they couldn't force people to go to the theatre, they would lose money.
that's the real truth.
“Happy Birthday” is copyrighted and brings in about $2,000,000 per year to the copyright holders (currently an investment group that purchased Warner Music who in turn was the most recent owner of the copyright for the song).
When the movie makers start consistantly making decent movies...who am I kidding! Who said you cannot make money out of rubbish?!

@ Cannotsleep, Happy birthday is no longer copyrighted, therefore, it can be used with consequences now.
Serves them right! It's not like murder is going on everyday anyway. Let's monitor big billion dollar companies issues first.

This is so much more important than trivial concerns such as global terrorism.
I don't care if they pirated a billion movies that sentence is a bit harsh and ridiculous. Murderers and pedofiles get off with lighter sentences, wtf is this world coming to. "Over 5 million in losses" oh boo hoo cry me a river, I surely hope hollywood can survive with taking such a major financial loss.
ET should post their contact info so we all can send them money in jail.
So these guys get 17 years, the German gets 3, the Aussies want to shut down VPNs,all the studio lawyers issue demands for compensation and yet Netflix STILL will not pay corporation tax in the UK....I would recommend a change of government....except they all went to the same school together, so they all think the same, that is that we the little people exist solely to make money for them and their rich friends....three cheers for capitalism!
And on and on it goes. Although it does seem to be getting easier for our opponents to get heavier sentences given to our fellow file sharers. And then there's BREIN. Evil with a compass and a map.

do the film makers care about us struggling out in this world while they make millions?
adds on tv $1 a day to save people thats only $365 a year but they only care about them selves.
that lost revenue will now come out of the tax payers pocket just to keep them in prison which over 17
years total will probably add up to the same cost what a waste of time....
who gets rich here?
the people complaining and the lawyers its all business.money and anger,,,,
people get less time for manslaughter !!!!!!!?????
this world needs a reality check.
1 question who invented the www if we go that far back we could blame them.???? they have made millions robbing every human being from there own pocket ...people need to unite grrrrrr human freedom is slowly disparaging....
