Incognito mode in Google’s Chrome browser is widely used to do many things, including privacy protection, present buying and porn watching. In other words, it is quite a popular way for more than a billion users to make sure that other people using the same device can’t see their surfing habits.
However, a Toronto student was very surprised to find his incognito browsing failing to protect him. When he launched a game on his device, he didn’t expect the porn he had been watching hours before that to be splashed on the black loading screen. The student believed that it was a bug in Nvidia’s GPU drivers, saying that the company’s graphics processing unit’s memory was not erased before being assigned to another app. As a result, the contents of one app leaked into another.
In response, Nvidia has put the blame on Apple, claiming that its software was not responsible for the issue. The company believes that the problem was related to memory management in the Apple operating system. Nvidia explained that its driver adheres to policies set by the OS and is working as expected. The company has never encountered this issue on Windows, where all app-specific information is cleared before memory is released to other apps.
On the other hand, the student said that he reported the bug to both Nvidia and Google 2 years ago, but it still has not been fixed. While porno splashed across the screen when loading a game may be just a minor embarrassment, the affected student pointed to other implications, saying that the problem is quite serious and breaks the user boundaries by allowing other users to spy on each other. Besides, the bug doesn’t need to be specifically exploited to harm you – in fact, it can happen purely by accident.
