VPN providers have largely criticized Netflix's fight against paying subscribers using various kinds of unblocking services, including proxies and VPNs, to access content not licensed for their countries of residence. A number of VPN companies have already implemented counter-measures; some of them raise the issue of Net Neutrality, suggesting that the company could find better ways to tackle abuse.
As you may remember, Netflix recently claimed that it would increase its efforts to block customers trying to bypass the geo-blockades. Therefore, it will become harder to use VPN services and proxies to access Netflix content from other countries. The streaming service already blocks IP-addresses linked to such services, and this also affects innocent customers who use a VPN only with the purpose to protect their privacy.
Several VPN providers are already dealing with the issue and promise to enable workarounds, while others claim that their focus lies on privacy and that enabling customers to watch Netflix has never been a priority. So far, Netflix hasn’t explained how it is going to block VPNs and proxies and what precautions it is going to take to make sure that legitimate users are not affected.
So, you should remember that users from the United States using a Canadian server to connect to the Internet are likely to be blocked. This situation affects millions of VPN users around the world, so plenty of collateral damage is expected there.
