Users worldwide were recently experiencing troubles with access to Twitter. It seemed that the service suffered a total outage followed by serious access problems. Access to Twitter began failing over the web, mobile and its API, with error messages reading that the network was “over capacity” and suffering an “internal error”. In an hour, the service had largely returned online, but its image handling service and home timelines continued to suffer.
According to Internet observers, Twitter’s own status board updated, confirming the outage, and the company’s developer-facing monitoring also confirmed that 4 of the 5 public APIs were down, suffering a “service disruption”. First, the search API was upgraded to “performance issues”, then a second API was upgraded to “performance issues”, and some users got access to the service. In the meantime, some services were still reported as down.
Twitter officially confirmed the outage by tweeting, from its @support account, which for some reason seemed to remain unaffected: “Some users are currently experiencing problems accessing Twitter. We are aware of the issue and are working towards a resolution.” Previously, Twitter’s “over capacity” error message even gained a nickname: “the fail whale”, as the outages were common. They happened due to the service’s architecture, which prevented Twitter from easily expanding capacity by simply adding servers to its back end.
