Undoubtedly, the so-called Internet-of-things carries lots of benefits to everyday users: today you are able to pay your bills, unlock a garage door and find your car keys from your smartphone. However, it also carries a downside: your online banking can be hacked and you can lose all money from your bank account, and your car can be hacked as well and drive away from you.
Now there is one more reason to keep your world unconnected from the Internet: there is a search engine Shodan out there that allows anyone to find live video of anything from webcams without proper security precautions, including videos of sleeping babies whose parents use webcams as a monitoring device.
The engine advertises itself as the search engine for webcams. It was launched 7 years ago to scan every Internet-connected device looking for vulnerabilities and insecurities. In other words, it reveals weaknesses that are already out there. However, that hasn’t stopped it facing criticism, as it is being accused of providing tips on how to exploit any object, including critical infrastructures. Now the site has launched a new paid feed for $49, which shows how to find, scrape and deliver footage from unsecured web cameras.
It looks like Shodan’s feed is aimed at highlighting the drawback of Internet of things and the poor level of online security. It turns out that there are lots of webcams with predictable default passwords or even no passwords at all. For example, a few months ago, a France-based director at a major international company specializing in cyber security announced that they used the service and found “all of the nuclear plants in France that are connected to the Internet”.

"For example, a few months ago, a France-based director" ??? Really? Then why not published his name lol..this is just a duck tales, so everyone who is connected to internet and someone want to "spy" on him through "unsecured" webcams, it is NOT POSSIBLE unless your webcam came from China or other shit....
Because all new webcams and also build-in are set up that any exploited "hacker" will be prompted to PC password, IF the PC doesn't have any password the user also will be prompted by windows firewall that some INCOMING connection is being established OR try to connected...
The rumors on how to "hack" webcams" is passed 10 years ago, and if anyone will create some "webcam free gather" program, the only one will be FBI or CIA, not a simple "search engine" website unless the webcams are set tp public IP and user allow to share that connections
PS: I always put a piece of "black duct tape" on my webcam as I'm paranoid as well
Anyways nice post
REALLY??!!...wat else is new...don't think,for once,that all this "snoop-based" tech ain being used 4 jus that purpose...startz out fun;..whow!..ooh!,look what i got!..n then here it comes...the truth....thx 4 NFO...
i will not devulge how its done... but its quite simple to do
This is not really news. I guess it depends on your perception and attention span.

some peoples use RAT(remote admin tool) and they can see your webcam.
@1 if you want to be spied on just use windows ,it has backdoors for video feed, audio and any other plug and play device therein and should the man or anyone else wish to surreptitiously hack ,exploit or monitor you it is the best platform to do it on as 73 Microsoft fusion centers, homeland security,CIA,NSA,or the man down the street and his dog are apt to do.You do not need a chinese camera to do it with as a good ole USA one works just as well and you do not even have to be hacked to do it as there are certain programs that can be installed to allow access to said video cams which will do the job just as well and which are invisible to the casual user RAT`s are not required if you have physical access, keyloggers, prey and other programs can be installed and used to spy on the unwary also.To show just how insecure your defenses are under windows requires an understanding of ethical hacking as in the case of Microsoft distributing a payload on 3 million computers at once without the consent of the owners to try and prevent the spread of a virus(which proved it could be done even when it stopped nothing). Not a new idea since sub zero and other exploits did similar things in the past with commands that made your dvd draw open and close at a keystroke and that was 10 years ago long enough for the feds and other governments to perfect such exploits for use today.
just as an indicator of what can be done to your PC especially windows go to h.t.t.ps://www.exploit-db.com/remote/ web cams are the least of your worries and yes quite feasible that anyone is not beyond being exploited on the w.w.w or IRC even a tech savvy manager of a nuclear facility which is why most infrastructure in power and water are standalone computers not plugged into the internet since then they cannot be exploited off-site.
just for web cam exploits alone there are a few ways to go about such h.t.t.ps://www.exploit-db.com/search/?action=search&description=web+cam&secimg=ncrp&e_author= so do not believe as @1 does that it is nonsense since it is done daily and people never know that their web cam, audio, skype ,email etc are all susceptible as is their data and it takes a release of the collected data before most have any idea that it is being done to them.People fear Facebook but in reality every service has vulnerabilities and you only have to turn on your windows O/S for it to happen, linux takes a little longer. (:^D) At the link there is also Dell web cam exploits which proves the Chinese are not the only web cams that are vulnerable.
