Due to a recently revealed bug, Apple’s native web browser Safari can now crash for users all over the world. Indeed, iPhone and Mac users complain that typing into the address bar is causing the app to suddenly close. Not all users are affected, but the flaw seems to be connected to Apple’s Safari suggestions function. The latter responds to search requests and URL queries. So, what should you do if you encountered such a problem?
One way to temporarily fix the problem is to access settings on your Apple device and disable the “suggestions” function for Safari. Another way is to enter private browsing mode when opening a new tab in Safari – when you browse in private mode, the background of the browser goes black. Finally, you can just abandon Safari and use another browser app on your choice.
How does this bug work? When you type into the address bar, the text is sent to servers and gets a respond in the form of autocomplete search terms, popular websites and other data. This means that the bug’s origins are with the servers. So far, Apple reported no issues with the servers and provided no explanation to the problem. It is also unclear whether the flaw affects only devices running the 9.2.1 version of iOS released earlier in January. However, the experts believe it doesn’t, because all operating systems, including desktop, seem to be experiencing the same problem.
The bug comes just a few days after a prank website, crashsafari.com, was created to reboot users’ devices. Clicking the link to website causes the browser to overload with a self-generated string of text and forces devices to shutdown. Users of Android devices are also affected, so everyone is cautioned to check what link they click.
