The Czech Pirate Party was seen deliberately provoking authorities with the launch of pirate websites and finally got being prosecuted by the police. 5 years ago, the Czech division of the party launched its own movie download site Tipnafilm.cz under the slogan “Linking is not a Crime”. The website had an attractive layout with links to content, movie covers, embedded trailers, and links to reviews. Another pirate, Piratskefilmy.cz, contained 20,000 links to more than 5,800 films. By launching these websites, the Pirate Party challenged the Anti-Piracy Union, declaring “open war” on the anti-piracy outfit. The Party also launched TV focused site Sledujuserialy.cz, and this one has finally elicited the response of the copyright owners.
The Czech Pirate Party has just been officially notified that it will be prosecuted in criminal court over its long-term political campaign “Linking is Not a Crime”. As we can see, the pirates’ plan progressed as predicted, even though it has taken more than 4 years to come to fruition: the Czech Anti-Piracy Union filed a complaint with the police.
Unlike all other torrent site operators, the Pirate Party announced they are happy to find themselves in trouble with the law. The Party explained it has been forced to take this action in order to fight the persecution of linking online, pointing out that such websites as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube don’t face any action for doing the same, even though they are commercial sites.
So far, it is not clear how Czech copyright law will compare the Party’s hand-curated TV show download service and user-generated content sites like YouTube. However, finding out is clearly the Party’s aim.
