President Barack Obama is going to ask Congress to pledge billions of dollars to help students learn computer science skills, because he believes it is necessary to prepare for jobs in our ever-changing and more and more digital economy. It is absolutely clear that today computer science isn’t an optional skill – it’s a must-have.
In the meantime, only about 1/4 of K-12 schools offer computer science instruction, but most parents want their kids to develop analytical and coding skills. This is quite understandable – even auto mechanics today are not simply sliding under cars to change the oil; instead, they are working on machines running on 100m lines of code, which is 100 times more than the space shuttle. Not only boys are eager to get computer education: modern nurses are also analyzing data and managing electronic health records. Even machinists are writing computer programs, says Barack Obama.
So, Congress will soon receive the federal budget proposal for 2017 from the president, where the latter will seek $4bn for grants to states and $100m for competitive grants for school districts over the next 3 years to teach computer science. Meanwhile, the National Science Foundation and the Corporation for National and Community Service will forward $135m in 2016 on training teachers over 5 years.
Barack Obama also calls for governors, mayors, business leaders and tech entrepreneurs to become advocates for popularization of computer science education. While all countries over the world from China to Estonia are expanding computer science education, the Unites States for some reason is moving just more slowly than required.

"Ask". He never asks, he dictates. If he *actually* cares about something he takes out his pen and paper.
Waste of his time. The Republicans will see the words "science" and "education" and block it.
Thanks Number one! Number two you suck! Obumma is the biggest cancer since Bush number two!
Yeah, yeah, notice you couldn't refute what I said.
You should learn to read, Therealbubfred. I never said anything about Obama.

|Did you guys know that computer programming is taught in 100% schools in Russia since 80s. Many schools in 90s didn't had single computer (many don't have modern PCs even now), but 100% middle school students had to learn BASIC (1 year) and Pascal (2 years min). Also it's mandatory in high-school (2 years in Russia). Also 2 year course mandatory for all technical specialties in colleges/universities. And still programmers in demand because you need aptitude for this profession, knack. Many smart people could learn basics and code simple toy programs, but they only be mediocre programmers despite all their effort. And most people can't code at all.||
