The tech giant found itself under pressure to end its policy of permanently disabling repaired devices when software is upgraded. The movement is growing with consumers claiming the company could be acting illegally. US lawyers have already announced they are going to bring a class action against Apple representing victims whose £500 smartphones have been rendered worthless after iOS upgrade.
Apparently, Apple’s policy of effectively disabling consumers’ iPhones after the software upgrade could potentially be regarded as an offence under the Criminal Damage Act 1971, which makes it an offence to intentionally destroy the property of another.
A few days ago, thousands of iPhone 6 users found out that the recent iOS software upgrade permanently disabled their devices with “error 53” code. So far, they have found no way to restore iPhones to working order. It turned out that the system effectively disables the device in case of detecting not original touch ID fingerprint recognition and/or home button. There are many people who had had their smartphones repaired by 3rd-party contractors or damaged them. iPhones had been working normally all the way before the recent iOS 9 upgrade shut them down.
After receiving a lot of complaints, Apple claimed that it was intended as a security feature. However, people believe that such policy could aim at increasing revenues by forcing customers needing a repair to their home button to pay $340 for official replacement. Now all the affected customers are furious, because when they complained at Apple stores, they were told that nothing can be done and they must now buy a new phone.
Now the Seattle-based law firm called for victims to get in touch and is now going to bring a class action suit against Apple. The firm believes that such controversial policy may violate consumer protection laws in the United States. The victims will be represented for free. If the company continues with this policy, it could face more legal battles and additional scrutiny by the European commission. The latter already investigates how Apple and other tech giants manage their tax affairs in the region.
As for Apple, it has so far provided no other comments than claiming that “error 53” is a security measure to protect the mobile device and prevent a fraudulent Touch ID sensor from being used.

That's because crapple think everyone are zipped up the back
Take that SHITpple.
If I buy anything worth more than $500 then it becomes my property and I can do anything with it. SHITpple is no one to force me to get it repaired from them only. They cannot even deny the updates as per the consumer laws worldwide, let alone bug the phone with an error. This is why Skynet(Alphabet) is the number 1 tech company now.
I laugh at the millions of people who line up whenever apple comes out with a new device.
Apple deserves to be brought though and good luck to the lawyers
I will stick with my multi billion dollar corporation whose ethics I often find questionable. Android.
At least Bill Gates gives some of his billions to worthwhile causes.
So Apple makes billions, lawyers will now make millions...consumers still get ripped off. Enough is enough. Send people to jail for this crap.
@robbow123 The Billionaire (World's Richest Man) Bill Gates is from MicroShit, not Google. I get the point though. Windows devices are also interesting and capable, only if they have an unlockable bootloader, so that I can flash Android to them
Android is open source, and flashing custom ROMs leave them open to so many more possibilities than Apple or Microsoft could ever compete with.
apples days are numbered the iphone is the only thing that has made them any real money

The worlds richest man was JD Rockefeller. y'know, the guy who invented steel and brought us out of the iron age. Next to an achievement like that Steve Jobs basically took a dump and tried to market it as an air freshener.
On a side note, I find it funny that without Bill Gates saving their scompanyhlt in the 90s, macintosh would have died out then and there, much as they are now. (yes, history does repeat itself)..
Regarding said future, apple thinks it's wearables (iwatch) while microsoft thinks it's AR (Hololens). 'nuff said.
As long as you're reading this, I'd like to point out that everything sucks. microsoft, apple, google, pepsi, coke, dr. pepper, chevy, ford, dodge, etc.. all junk. Some just suck less than others. Maybe we'll get lucky and someone will invent something USEFUL, like a battery that lasts longer than a day. 6 months on a charge would be nice.

this has been going on for years with apple, their goods have always had to be fixed by their reps or dealers, i watched a consumer program in the uk over 10 years ago, apple vs microsoft, where the launched 2 computers out a 2 story wondow and proceded to fix them.
the ms was fixed in hours when the guy went to pc world and bought a new motherboard, although the pc was laid out on a table, it worked, the mac on the otherhand also needed a motherboard, but they were unable to buy one unless they took it to a dealer to get it fixed at great cost, that and the fact it would have taken 3 weeks to order it makes MS a total winner over apple.
in reply to chlodio above,...... when did the yanks make anything decent? their luxury cars have plastic dashs that feel like their made of recycled yoghurt pots
