Apple Refused to Unlock iPhone for FBI in Defense of Civil Liberties

Tim Cook announced that Apple’s refusal to cooperate with the American government in unlocking an iPhone used by the San Bernardino shooter was a defense of civil liberties. The company called for the DoJ to withdraw its order after the FBI director demanded Apple should comply in order to help bring justice to the victims.

San Bernardino attack was carried out by Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik, on December 2, and resulted in 14 people killed and 22 people injured.

Tim Cook emphasized they deeply sympathized with the victims, but that particular case was about more than a single device and following the Department of Justice’s orders could set a dangerous precedent. Other tech giants, including Google and Facebook, also believe that the data security of hundreds of millions of law-abiding people is at stake, and this case would set a dangerous precedent that threatens everyone’s civil liberties.

As for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, it claimed that the order was not about setting a legal precedent, but instead about providing the victims with a complete investigation. The FBI explained that it just needs the chance to guess the shooter’s passcode without his iPhone essentially self-destructing and without it taking a decade to decrypt. A few days ago, a federal court in California granted the justice department the order, and now Apple have little time to formally protest against the ruling.

Of course, the victims of the attack are going to support the government’s efforts, and they can be understood – they were targeted by terrorists, and they need to know why and how this could happen. In the meantime, Apple admitted it did have the technical capability to obey the government’s order, but believed that is too dangerous to do.

Tonybigguns avatarGood for Apple. I'm not a fan or do I own any of their devices, but I do agree with the stand they are taking. I hope more companies do the same.

No avatarEventually the government will admit they had other means to discover the information without hacking that phone or anyone else's phone.

They are just looking for the easy way. Another way to control the people.

Congrats to Apple for resisting tyranny!

WelshIdiot avatarQUOTE: "unlocking an iPhone used by the San Bernardino shooter was a defence of civil liberties"

REALLY!!! I feel quite sick that in light of the situation people are more concerned about privacy than the chance of stopping another attack before it happens.

Please don't be giving me grief about how I am controlled by big brother because I am not and you can have a sweet Fcuk U back in your little minded faces!!

What Civil Liberties does Apple think terrorists actually have, especially when they are more than guilty??

Especially when there is no chance of them no being guilty.............. What about the Civil Liberties of the 14 innocent lives these barbarians took??

Tonybigguns avatarWow WelshIdiot you are an idiot. Since you are up for giving out info just post your social security number here along with your mothers maiden name. Credit card info also will be nice. Don't worry nobody but the government will use it.

Things happens sorry these people died but why give into them? What will that do now? Nothing but give them access to anything they want at any time. These companies need to stand up and say no. Just because stupid people like you think we have nothing to lose or have rights.

You can feel as sick as you want and a big fcuk you for having a smaller mind. I like having the few liberties I have. No reason to lose them because people like you think the way they do.

Thank you for letting me rant.
