According to the Crown Prosecution Service, it will introduce criminal charges for social media trolls who set up fake profiles under their victims’ names to harass them. British 4-year-old social media guidelines will be updated in order to cover innovations like Snapchat and establish specific revenge porn measures aimed at prosecuting people posting explicit images of former partners without their consent.
The service explained it had to respond to the increasing use of false identity used for posting humiliating content on the Internet. The CPS issued a statement on the new guidance, saying that creating a profile under the name of the victim with untrue information may be regarded as a criminal offence. If the profile in question shares information from the name of the victim, it could amount to grossly offensive communication or harassment.
According to Crown Prosecution Service, the new guidelines wouldn’t stifle free speech, because it assumed a “high threshold” of offence to victims to be crossed before prosecutions were launched. Some CPS representatives also call for a change in the law to allow victims of online abuse to be granted anonymity to encourage them to go to court, like in blackmail cases.
In the framework of the initiative, the popular microblogging service Twitter has agreed to train prosecutors in the UK to better address abuse on the Internet. The Crown Prosecution Service said that Twitter would help it contend with criminal activity like revenge porn. The service recognized that online communication is developing at a rapid pace, and abusers find new ways of targeting people every day. Social media is particularly being used to facilitate both existing and new offences.
