First time ever, Apple Macs users were targeted by hackers using ransomware – one of the fastest-growing types of cyber threats, which encrypts information on infected computers and demands users to pay ransoms to be able to retrieve their data.
According to statistics, ransoms bring hackers hundreds of millions of dollars every year, but the demands were usually presented to users of Microsoft’s Windows, while Apple Macs were safe. But now it was revealed that “KeRanger” malware in early March became the first functioning ransomware attacking Macs. The security experts confirmed that it was definitely functional, encrypting files and seeking a ransom.
In respond, Apple announced it had already taken steps to prevent attacks by revoking a digital certificate from a legitimate Apple developer who enabled the malware to install on its computers, but no other details were revealed. It is known that KeRanger encrypts files on an infected machine 3 days after the original infection. Security specialists promised to release a blog post advising Mac users on ways to check whether they were infected and steps they can take to protect against it harming their data.
The open source software that was infected with the ransomware originated from the Transmission site. Transmission is one of the most popular BitTorrent Mac apps. Transmission carried a warning saying that version 2.90 of its app had been infected with malware and advised users to upgrade to version 2.91 or delete the malicious one. 2.91 is currently available on Transmission website, which also provided technical information on how you could check to see if you were affected.
