|When it comes to choosing a Virtual Private Network or VPN as it is commonly known, many users find it hard to determine which one is best for them. To help solve your problems, a reddit user ThatOnePrivacyGuy created a VPN comparison spreadsheet of 125 large VPN providers on the web. This VPN comparison is also published on Lifehacker, PC Tech Magazine, Gizmodo and other websites
The sheet is packed with major features of VPN:
- Jurisdiction of every VPN company (offshore jurisdiction is OK, U.S. jurisdiction is NOT GOOD)
- Based in a “fourteen eyes” country? If VPN providers is located in "fourteen eyes" list - avoid them!
14 countries that like to spy and compare notes on each others citizens - Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, US, Denmark, France, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden.
- Does VPN provider log any data (Traffic, DNS, IP addresses)? The Best VPNs don't log user activity.
- Does VPN block BitTorrent or other protocols?
- Does VPN provider accept anonymous payments via Bitcoin? The Best VPNs accept anyonymous payments.
- Does VPN require user personal information? The good VPNs needs email of the user only. No first name, last name, addresss and etc.
- Free Trial Available? The good VPNs have a free trial period to test it.
- How many devices can be connected to VPN simultaneously?
- Supported Protocols, OS, devices and many other.
The full VPN comparison list is available on Google Docs here.
Why do you need VPN while torrenting?
VPN is a tool that hides your IP address and your identity, it encrypts traffic and has no logging, so, your IP address will never be revealed and you will be 100% anonymous while torrenting. Government or your ISP can't track your activity. No more any copyright infringement notices from your ISP and government agencies! With a VPN, you are free to download any files you need without any risk.
As you have already known, ExtraTorrent's Best VPN choice for Torrenting is Trust.Zone VPN.
Trust.Zone has founded by the part of ExtraTorrent community and it cares about safety of ET members and every downloader. It's a tool that hides your IP address and your identity, it encrypts traffic and has no logging, so, your IP address will never be revealed and you will be 100% anonymous while torrenting. Government or your ISP can't track your activity. No more any copyright infringement notices from your ISP and government agencies! With a VPN, you are free to download any files you need without any risk.
Trust.Zone is under Seychelles jurisdiction and it operates according to law in Seychelles. There is no mandatory data retention law in Seychelles. A court order would not be enforceable and since Trust.Zone doesn’t store any logs – there is nothing to be taken from their servers.
Now, you can compare ExtraTorrent's recommended Trust.Zone VPN with other VPNs - according to the VPN comparison chart made by independent source.

I was reading this document yesterday,it brings up some very interesting points to consider when choosing a provider
TrustZone is rubbish. Half of the servers are blocked by Netflix. Even some of the free VPN's are better
Maybe useful as did not know about the '14 eyes' thing. I regularly use my VPN to connect to those countries.

*** Does anyone else, who is the U.S. and using a paid VPN or proxy service with Euro servers, have the same issue that I do? ***
I have been using a particular VPN service provider for a few years. Bandwidth has always been descent(2-5 Mbps) up till 3-4 months ago. Except for a couple of hours in the morning, speed now averages around 80Kbps!
I don't know if there is an issue with the route, ISP is throttling or what. I get similar results with any Euro server. The VPN service provider has always been very responsive and said their servers are not over saturated. They shared the results of their download tests and they cannot replicate my issue but they are not testing from the U.S. like I am. I know they could be lying but I don't think they are. I went ahead and paid for a month of service from PIA and get similar results.
Is it just me experiencing this issue?
CyberGhost 5.... That's the best VPN I know of... and the one I use... they have both a free version and paid version... worth buying the yearly though..
Can pick 1 of 30 different countries, each with a list of different IPs to pick from, allowing for bypassing any IP region locks and tracking.. it can also block ads, force HTTPS, and online tracking from websites...

I would highly recommend that you try TrustZone's one day free trial before paying them anything. I've had multiple issues; several disconnects PER DAY (compared to ONE disconnect per YEAR with my previous provider); their Midwest server is out in Montana somewhere while I'm in Chicago and the speed is horrible. (I can't believe they don't have a server in the major metropolis of the Midwest).
So I asked for a refund. After paying $35.88 and using the service for THREE DAYS, I was given a refund of $26.31. That's $9.57 for THREE DAYS of service. Be warned and try their free option first.
According to Trust.Zone terms, you have 10 days to get 100% REFUND
see here https://trust.zone/terms
If you are not completely satisfied with our VPN services, and you notify us in writing via email within the first 10 days of your contract that you wish to cancel, you will be given a 100% refund of the contract amount in case the bandwidth usage in not more than 1GB.
Have you spent more than 1 GB?
@mikepool...Until recently there was a major security issue with most VPN's which exploited port forwarding. Around the time you mentioned, it was discovered and most VPN's solved the issue by scrapping port forwarding altogether. This can result in blocked listening port which would certainly cause a speed issue. I'm not saying this is your problem but might be worth a look

Thank you for responding but I don't believe that to be the cause. The issue is exactly the same, each day. There is only a 2-3 hour window when I get descent bandwidth. I just don't know if the problem is caused by my ISP, my VPN service provider or if there's a bottleneck somewhere in the route from EU to US. I have a fast connection from my ISP but I get dial-up speed with two VPN service providers for all but 2-3 hours of the day. I was hoping others in the US could tell me what bandwidth they get when connecting to VPN servers in the EU. I don't want to waste more money trying other VPN providers if I get the same crappy results.

Yes, I used more than 1GB. You do realize that's about one movie or four TV episodes? Within the three days, the servers crashed twice, I was disconnected multiple times, and when the servers were up over the weekend the ping rate went from 18ms to 488ms! Ridiculous. I should have added in my earlier post that you should be sure to take your one day free trial on a weekend day when traffic is highest.

I find it interesting that the only thing in the entire list that TrustZone compares itself to are obscure secong and third rate services. Where's the majors? Where's PIA or the Private Internet Access comparison...Oh it isnt there and why is that? because the purpose of this post like most others is to sell TrustZone VPN and that cant happen if you compare it to the most respected VPN services like PIA! C'mon guys be fair don't slant the information in your favor.
bitcoin payment is pointless unless you're in north korea or china
@Vinyl, have you opened this list? There are 129 VPN providers to compare! You can compare TrustZone with PIA or other VPN providers. It's your choice!
This list is not affiliated with Trust.Zone. It's developed by @ThatOnePrivacyGuy, well-known REDDIT modetator.
PIA is located in the US, so, PIA belongs to "Fourteen Eyes Countries" List. TrustZone is located in Seychelles

PIA isnt blocking you...and PRIVATE INTERNET ACCESS PIA for short has a REAL 7 DAY Money Back Guarantee with none of that 1 GB in 10 days nonsense. You visit the TrustZone site and no matter where you are VPN or not they say your protection is poor. According to them any protection but theirs is poor...
For all the comparisons i just think the whole 14 eyes thing is being used here in this case to increase user paranoia and manipulate people to gravitate towards a specific provider TrustZone, which in previous incarnations at ET administrators (member/staff at ET) has proved unreliable. If you use 1gb of data in 10 days forget your refund. One download on ET is 1gb in one minute.
When dealing with foreign countries like the one TrustZone is based in remember you have limited recourse in case you end up unhappy. Forget about refunds. forget about having your complaints taken seriously. Once you sign up your fooked, the free trial is nothing more that bait and completely different from actual use. BEWARE BUYER
@jamie1983, you can't use two vpn at the same time. One of them may block another because they may use the same network adapter.
Just reinstall one of them, it helps
Netflix by TrustZone is OK for me!

I looked at @ThatOnePrivacyGuy's VPN chart. Just compared PIA and TrustZone. Both are OK.
But PIA is in the US, it's curious! They operate according to the US laws.
TrustZone is in Seychelles - user friendly laws, sounds safer for me!

@Avish. You are quite right but what you probably don't know is that nations outside of US jurisdiction mean they [LE] can use more unscrupulous procedures. In many ways people are more protected by using US companies as a warrant is required to investigate. Where as any Country outside the US is considered "fair game" and the US law enforcement will just hack the shit out of them/you for the information they require without ANY come back.
At least if you use an American company a warrant is required at some point. Anywhere else... Not the case!
Think about this.

The only worry I have with Trust.Zone is that it only offers about 20 servers. Many other sites offer hundreds or thousands of different servers. That means hundreds or thousands of different server addresses. I know the more server addresses a VPN company offers means the more they have to pay. But Trust.Zone has many customers. Surely they can afford to lease or purchase more than just 20 server addresses? I know how many server addresses they offer because I purchased Trust.Zone. The number of servers they allow me to choose from is my only worry when using Trust.Zone.
Getting a refund is really not worth making a fuss about. The service only costs about $35 per year and you can pay by the month or 3 months or 6 months. It's just not worth all the time and effort to get a refund for $35. That price is really almost zero compared to the cost of the problems you can have by not using a VPN.
Overall, Trust.Zone has many good features (like a kill switch and it lets you use Bit/Torrent). Many VPNs do not have these important services. There is a good article published by TorrentFreak titled, "Which VPN Services Take Your Anonymity Seriously? 2016 Edition". I will not post the link because I don't know if this site allows people to post links. But you can just search for the title and you will find this article. It lists many questions and answers that compnanies have been asked and answered about what services their VPN offers. You should look at what the various companies have to say.
I would just ask you all this question. "Given that this site has provided many hours of quality service to us, why would you begrudge the people who run this site the opportunity to make some money selling Trust.Zone? AFAIC, they are most welcome to my $35 and God Bless them!
I wish people would learn and educate themselves. just because a vpn is in the united states doesn't mean fourteen anything. pia. keeps zero logs and REFUSES ALL law enforcement requests. they just had big case where the FBI took pia to court. the FBI lost.there isn't any logs to give up. and they were taken to court because they refused all the FBI warrants.hundreds servers, great speed. NO speed limits,or data limits. trust zone uhhhh no. being in network security for 30+ years, 14 with cyber command ( retired ) i defiantly would not recommend trust zone.

Does anyone know what are the drawbacks of using your own VPS (and your own VPN hosted on this VPS ?) , anonymity wise ?
I mean yes, if some shady activity is detected on your server, your the only user, but is it not counterbalanced by the fact that your own small VPS and VPN is unlikely to be noticed / flagged (unless you try to hack the pentagon or something like that of course, but just for P2P, and avoid censorship etc..).
Because it's cheaper and more flexible to rent a VPS, on which you can host your own VPN, proxies, seedboxes, etc... (you can even configure your vpn to work on port 80, which is almost guaranteed to be always open even on the most restricted networks)
Currently I do just that - my next step would be to try to find a host that accepts bitcoins or some other crypto currency - but usually they are more expensive.
Anyone else just runs his own VPN, among other services, on his own VPS ?
When you look at the whole speadsheet, they no longer have YES/NO labels on them, making it just about unreadable. The greens and reds can each mean either yes or no. Well done!
I have used in the past Spotflux and Hotspot, now I’m a user of Trus.Zone, both of the previous VPN’s block torrent downloading so they are not much use to you; but for me Trust Zone paid for provides me with around 26gb of uploading using Vuze per day, in the last 333 days I have uploaded 5.46 TB of torrents and downloaded only 1.39 TB.

Thanks, all of this is very useful and informative; hopefully, ExtraTorrent, is taking the necessary steps to avoid any kind of major headache or mishaps themselves; ultimately, I don't think what the government is doing is going to work, anywhere in the world, there's just too much involved (people, users, companies, countries, etc, etc, you name it! ) They are way in over their heads and almost 3/4 of century behind, all this is going to is create more work for them and anybody else trying to stop it, and that WON'T happen, not in our lifetime, the only good thing about the government creating more work for itself is, it could create more jobs, LONG LIVE TORRRENTING, to hell with the government, EVERYWHERE!!! Torrent responsibly, use protection, get a VPN, IMMEDIATELY!!!
One concern to me is that TZ uses their own protocol within their client. No one actually knows which protocol that is and how secure it is. I stick to the regular OpenVPN - Client instead. That whole client of theirs looks a bit shady to me. Even more so as speeds are significantly slower with the client, because it seems to use TCP instead of UDP.
To those with speed problems: Try the generic OpenVPN client, download the UDP - configs from the TZ homepage and connect. The downside is that you'll have to take care of DNS and IP Leaks yourself. You'll have to set up firewall rules in case VPN connection drops. For DNS you can use DNSJumper or a similar software.

Although I'm with PIA, when you look at 'who' designed Trust.Zone, I would have to say that the data in the list above would keep you very safe from the "14 eyes countries". As for VPN speeds varying, I me personally being in Australia, a "14 eyes country", my download are fastest when America is awake.. and when America is sleeping, my VPN speeds drop. It appears that it is related to who is currently present and available. In the evening here at approximately 0800hrs, the Eastern seaboard of the USA is waking up and jumping on to their computers before work.. or on all day and I get their upload speeds at a higher rate. I am currently set to go through Melbourne, Australia. My PIA VPN is set at "UDP", Remote Port "auto", Local port "8080", BitTorrent is set at Port "8080", Global max connections "1000", Connected peers "250", Number of upload slots "5", Max upload speed set at "1kbps" only when grandson playing his PlayStation games so as not to slow his "PING" and gaming down.. other wise I just let upload speed rip. Just be aware that Upload speeds seem to affect your download a great deal. an example of this that I have found by researching and testing is: If GOOGLE DRIVE is to upload faster than 20 kbps, and DROPBOX faster than 30 kbps will drastically reduce your download speed. both those service can have "Unlimited" setting for download speed without affecting your torrent download speed. I hope this helps some.

From Opera VPN Review from
“Free VPN” is now an integrated feature of Opera’s stable desktop browsers. Despite its nomenclature, however, this feature is really a proxy service rather than a true VPN. A true VPN encrypts your entire internet connection, while Opera’s “Free VPN” only encrypts the data from your browser. Using this “VPN” does not protect your BitTorrent downloads or other internet activity outside the Opera browser.
