A Twitter user received text messages purporting to be from Mark Carney, governor of the Bank of England. The messages were about $6.5 million he never knew about. Industry experts believe that it was a very bold attempt at online fraud.
One of the Twitter users was receiving messages purporting to be from the man in charge of the British monetary policy, saying that Mark Carney was texting him about his alleged funds worth $6.5m and asked to text Carney back. When the victim informed the sender that the situation had been reported to the police, the scammer didn’t give up. Instead, he tried to convince the user he was real Mark Carney by sending a mock-up of a Bank of England security pass, saying that the ID card could prove that the transaction in question was for real and “highly legitimate.”
The user didn’t get angry. Instead he was amused, admitting that he had seen many scams, but never saw anyone posing as the governor of the Bank of England. Of course, the impostor failed to explain why the governor would be personally texting people about lost funds, or why he would denominate the amount in dollars. Of course, the BOE confirmed that Mark Carney had not been sending any text messages offering money to random strangers.
In the meantime, the ambitious attempt drew ridicule on Twitter, with microbloggers riffing on the content of the messages: for example, one of the users ironically upbraided the victim for doubting the provenance of the text, pointing out that “Mark Carney” promised the text was “highly legitimate.” Others were discussing other possible scams involving major figures in the world of economics, including timeshares offered by IMF managing director.
