The popular Russian torrent site RuTracker and Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan were nominated for the annual "Free Knowledge" award from Russian Wikimedia. Both online services were praised for their efforts to distribute media and scientific publications for free.
It is the third year that the official Russian Wikimedia chapter is awarding a prize to someone who made a notable contribution corresponding with Wikimedia’s goals.
The nominations for the Wiki “Free Knowledge” award include the largest torrent tracker in the region RuTracker and Sci-Hub founder Alexandra Elbakyan, who made headlines after being sued by Elsevier, one of the largest academic publishers. Through Sci-Hub Alexandra offer millions of academic articles free of charge. She believes that everyone should have access to knowledge. Many scientists calling for more open access to research findings support her position. They point out that for many Russian scientists, Sci-Hub is in fact the only way to quickly get access to scientific articles.
Russian Wikimedia presented 9 nominees, including a Russian State Library project, the Russian Ministry of Defense and the recently banned “forever” torrent tracker RuTracker, which has pushed back hard against legal pressure and censorship efforts. One should admit that RuTracker deserves to be awarded for helping freely spread Russian culture. Indeed, there are lots of content creators distributing their own works through RuTracker: musicians, writes, directors, scientists, teachers, photographers and others.
However, others may disagree with the nomination of RuTracker, pointing at numerous copyright violations that run contrary to the ideas of the Wikimedia Foundation. Anyway, now the members of the Russian Wikimedia chapter will have to weigh the pros and cons for each of the nominees and announce it in May during the award ceremony.
