The government of the United Kingdom is going to ask the Parliament to increase custodial sentences up to 10 years for online piracy, at the same time ensuring the protection of unwitting pirates.
A year ago, the UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO) conducted a study, which concluded that criminal sanctions for copyright violation should be amended and brought into line with such offenses as counterfeiting. The results of the study also triggered a proposal from the British government that the maximum prison sentence for online piracy should be increased from the current 2 years to 10 years to be a sufficient deterrent.
Several months ago, the UK government started a consultation in order to gauge opinion on increasing penalties to make sure that online copyright infringement is taken as seriously as offline infringements. Now the government released its conclusions after studying more than a thousand responses and confirmed that it is going to ask Parliament for a 10-year maximum sentence. At the same time, it was noted that a number of safeguards are already in place to make sure a very low level infringer would not be subjected to a high penalty.
The government also addressed concerns raised by the consultation that unwitting pirates might be sentenced to jail, referencing a system that has already been in place for some time: enforcement agencies currently have a staged response system that encompasses education, “cease and desist” notices, and domain suspension. This means that the pirates receive advance warnings that they can be jailed for a decade. The government also clarified that minor copyright infringement won’t lead to a criminal prosecution.
Of course, the consultation raised concerns that a 10-year sentence would place infringement alongside such offenses as rape and child cruelty, but the UK government still believes that the sentence is warranted. It referred to the case brought against a number of release group members in 2015 as an example that while 10 years is a maximum, it would be used rarely. In that case, 5 defendants received sentences totaling 17 years for releasing over 2,500 movies online without permission of the copyright holders.

The Government must be on crack if they think this is gonna work. Why should I contribute towards Jim parsons $1,000,000 per episode wage from big bang theory and many more like that when it's reasons like that why there are people in the world in poverty and starving to death. The celebs are richer than the Government and yet they still moan about online piracy why dont they get a life and start moaning about REAL problems in the world. If Jim Parson makes $1M an episode and Charlie sheen made $2M per episode in 2.5 men piracy can't be affecting celebrities wages. There's more to life than money and if it really affected their wages i'm sure most of them would of quit the business by now considering they new all about online piracy before they even applied to be an actor/Musician.When they stop fantasizing woman in the latest movies and TV shows i might actually pay for them but until then what is the point there is no story to them it's just sex and most of them remakes and TV shows today are all like CSI.Music today is just swearing and autotuned no matter what type of music you listen to and the lyrics have absolutely no meaning and the album isn't even 1 hour long but yet they charge us £10 to listen to it the album is normally 30-40 minutes which is 25p-33p a minute
Wow so there must be lots of cheap prison space in the UK and very very few other law breaking issues for them to be dealing with if they are buffing this [email protected] to 10 years in prison. Ever watch those police thingies where people are actually hurting each other with punches and weapons - and they get a 200 Euro fine or such like? Yeah Pirates must be really messing peoples lives more than a good beating.

10 years for a nonviolent crime ... capitalism is ridiculous! Next thing, only white male land owners should be able to vote! Oh, and how about debtor's prison ... you know they regret losing that one!
This will do nothing but increase crime, has no one learnt anything from american prisons? very light crimes with tough sentences make no sense, to have very young kids convicted who then turn into harden criminals. however many years, you put them on the inside with other real criminals you have f*cked them for life.
rapes and learning how to survive on the inside is all they will get, esp with youngest. They get their educations from the criminal elders.
And then when their out, most of them just turn to crime.
Your printing more criminals. its not a detterence.
Hope there will be protests and you can count on capitalism will eat democracy, esp if UK leaves the EU. fragmenting democracy just so capitalism can eat it easier.

im not from the uk but i hope this doesnt pass for their sake... that sentencing is obsurd.
here in the u.s an average sentence for first degree murder is 10-15 years. getting out earlier with good behavior.
the charge for piracy should be the same as shop lifting.
I'm pretty sure the entertainment industry gains more than it loses from the current state of pirated entertainment. It's more like a surprise advertising expense than a robbery.
Unfortunately a lot of people think of pirated copies as stolen goods. I burned my sister a bunch of dvds for christmas and she refused to take them because they were "stolen". As if she might go to jail for accepting stolen goods. took me like 2 weeks to make her those
I find this funny, rapist murderers and robbers don't even get this much jail sentence. Politicians are a JOKE
I'm a pirate. Can you people say the same? Comments on this topic are a joke or you would not be here.

@8 FYI the UK has withdrawn from the ECHR so as to make a peoples charter already so that they can make these new rules and laws it has nothing to do with joining the EU as its already done full on Hitler style without the consent of the electorate whom it will directly affect. As for the EU top nobel prize winning economist has already said joining the EU under TTIP is a bad idea, I personally do not want the EU army led by a pig freakin nazi like Dave Cameron as he has done to England what Hitler did in late 30`s Germany in a lot of ways to the country and its people.
Why dont they raise prison sentences as a deterrent for tax evasion by hiding their wealth in offshore dummy Corporations as exposed by the panama papers?
It has to be said when they fine the down and outs for rough sleeping or for sleeping in a car they are being totally unrealistic since when have the down and outs got a 50 quid note in their pocket to pay the police fine and so they become criminals for want of 50 quid,no kidding this is actively happening in Worthing on the south coast nr Brighton so I hope group 4 has the manpower to keep a few million incarcerated at a cost to the taxpayer of 44,000 GBP per year for each prisoner.
theres not enough prisons or spaces in the uk
that why people who beat other people or stab people ect get a suspended sentence - ie no prison time if they behave themselves for a period of time.
even paeophiles and people who commit murder and child killers get less prison time
