Australian ISPs Won’t Pay for Site Blocking

Local Internet service providers faced with demands to block a number of pirate websites including The Pirate Bay and Torrentz. However, the companies claimed they were not going to bear the costs. One of the providers agreed to block for 50 Australian dollars per domain, but another estimated costs at 800. Taking into account the number of domains involved, costs could get out of control.

Website blocking requests are used in many countries worldwide and the negotiations on them are often drawn out over months or even years. The bill passed in 2015 in Australia was intended to formalize the process, but that doesn’t appear to have detracted from the complexity of getting websites blocked under the Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Act 2015.

So far, the Federal Court is hearing two cases under the new legislation. The first case involves Roadshow Films, the second – TV giant Foxtel. Both of them are seeking to have a number of pirate websites blocked at the ISP level. Roadshow Films is targeting streaming portal Solarmovie, while Foxtel wants to block The Pirate Bay, Torrentz, isoHunt and TorrentHound.

All ISPs involved have confirmed that they intend neither to accept the blocking applications nor to oppose them, thus leaving the matter in the hands of the Court. Previously, the issue of costs shelved the Australia’s “three-strikes” regime, and now the Internet service providers again insist that they are not going to pay for the entertainment industries’ blocking efforts. The companies believe that as innocent parties they should not be the ones picking up the bills, especially when it is unclear how much those costs will rise to.

So, all parties will return to Court for another hearing on the blocking application this summer. In the meantime, the discussion on the matter will continue in a separate case brought by the music industry: back in April, the Australian Recording Industry Association and Australasian collecting society filed their first site-blocking application at the Federal Court, in which record labels targeted KickassTorrents. The music industry demanded a close to nationwide ISP blockade of the KickassTorrents and its associated proxy sites. This case will also be heard this summer.

No avatarmy other comment was that movies are busting box office records , more TV than ever being made a lot of it free to air I just download as someone has been nice enough to pull the ad's out for me, thanks for that saves me doing it, I don't want to force feed products I don't need or want. and the best of the best would cost me 50$ a month to watch what 2 shows come on really.

get real hey triple dipping Rupert go live in Siberia, we don't like you we don't want you in Australia , we are not going to pay you, you don't want to be one of us but you want to rob us blind bugga off mate !! I download just so you don't get paid

and sorry to the Siberians we don't dislike you that much so when he gets there you have our permission to toss him in a cheapo rocket and launch him on a one way trip to nowhere !!

No avatarI like how they built the internet to use to make money from the poor people, love how its turned and bit them on the butt , love that !! the actors are getting paid more shows than ever being made more TV channels than ever on air someone's making money or it wouldn't be like it is. as long as the actors have food on their plates and they do.

all is well and the only person getting hurt is Rupert from me downloading then download away and all day and thanks ET for letting us fight back against the dregs of this world the parasites !!

livevil avatarit takes less thant 30 seconds to change your dns from the isp provided one to google's or any other dns service out there. at a cost of 0$ to circumvent their efforts i welcome it.

what happens when it gets worse? you buy a seed box for less than 10$ a month and do all your torrenting to the box then ftp it back to your computer.

c'est la vie

brianic2012 avatarFinally an article that's close to the Truth well done Extratorrent!

But ,why are you still posting this article that is outdated and inaccurate now?

===> "How to Prevent Government Agencies from Tracking Your Torrenting " <===

it's on top of the article list again?

yes the court cases are in summer which is Nov-Dec ...Maybe!

Haven't we got an election coming before then? ...good time to let our voices be Heard!

The liberal Government are just murdoch puppets ...all pirates unite against the Tyrrany !

I Think i will still use my Free VPN's for now ..just to be safe ,as they will probably demand ISP's go back through our metadata ,to see what we downloaded and to fine us.
