Local Internet service providers faced with demands to block a number of pirate websites including The Pirate Bay and Torrentz. However, the companies claimed they were not going to bear the costs. One of the providers agreed to block for 50 Australian dollars per domain, but another estimated costs at 800. Taking into account the number of domains involved, costs could get out of control.
Website blocking requests are used in many countries worldwide and the negotiations on them are often drawn out over months or even years. The bill passed in 2015 in Australia was intended to formalize the process, but that doesn’t appear to have detracted from the complexity of getting websites blocked under the Copyright Amendment (Online Infringement) Act 2015.
So far, the Federal Court is hearing two cases under the new legislation. The first case involves Roadshow Films, the second – TV giant Foxtel. Both of them are seeking to have a number of pirate websites blocked at the ISP level. Roadshow Films is targeting streaming portal Solarmovie, while Foxtel wants to block The Pirate Bay, Torrentz, isoHunt and TorrentHound.
All ISPs involved have confirmed that they intend neither to accept the blocking applications nor to oppose them, thus leaving the matter in the hands of the Court. Previously, the issue of costs shelved the Australia’s “three-strikes” regime, and now the Internet service providers again insist that they are not going to pay for the entertainment industries’ blocking efforts. The companies believe that as innocent parties they should not be the ones picking up the bills, especially when it is unclear how much those costs will rise to.
So, all parties will return to Court for another hearing on the blocking application this summer. In the meantime, the discussion on the matter will continue in a separate case brought by the music industry: back in April, the Australian Recording Industry Association and Australasian collecting society filed their first site-blocking application at the Federal Court, in which record labels targeted KickassTorrents. The music industry demanded a close to nationwide ISP blockade of the KickassTorrents and its associated proxy sites. This case will also be heard this summer.

|it takes less thant 30 seconds to change your dns from the isp provided one to google's or any other dns service out there. at a cost of 0$ to circumvent their efforts i welcome it.|
what happens when it gets worse? you buy a seed box for less than 10$ a month and do all your torrenting to the box then ftp it back to your computer.
