A US security company Hold Security is known worldwide for obtaining stolen data from the hacking underworld. A few days ago, the company announced that it had received a database of 272 million email addresses along with the passwords from a hacker. The credentials are used by consumers to log in to websites.
The breached email addresses were mostly from Russian Mail.ru service, as well as from Gmail and Yahoo. However, the credentials do not necessarily open access to millions of email accounts. The details had been stolen from various smaller online services where customers use their email addresses and passwords to log in. In other words, the details won’t work for people who use a different password for their email account and other online services. However, people who use for multiple websites the same password as for their email are recommended to change their email password.
Hold Security founder explained that people wouldn’t be able to check if their emails were included in the latest database. 2 years ago, when the firm tried to establish such a service after obtaining a billion hacked login credentials, the website simply crashed.
It seems that the hacker was largely targeting Russian users, because about 57 million of the email addresses were from the largest email provider in Russia, Mail.ru. The email service currently accounts for 100 million monthly users. There were also about 40m Yahoo addresses, 33m Hotmail and 24m Gmail addresses.
The hacker had been bragging online that he had a lot of login credentials and was trying to sell them. Hold Security founder, who is fluent in Russian, told him he wouldn’t buy the data but could give him “likes” on posts in social networks in exchange. Posted by:
