FBI Continues Copyright Troll Investigation

Law firm named Prenda Law was known for extracting millions of dollars in cash settlements from alleged copyright infringers. Prenda Law doesn’t exist anymore, but its former operators are still under investigation: the FBI has already interviewed two co-founders of The Pirate Bay, and industry experts believe that the investigation is now in its latter stages.

More than ten years ago, enterprising groups made an attempt to turn piracy into profit, centering around law firms targeting file-sharers on their behalf. The firms tracked IP addresses back to their users and demanded settlements of hundreds to many thousands of dollars each in order to avoid prosecution. Prenda Law grabbed many headlines, mostly thanks to the negative court rulings which found the company to have engaged in vexatious litigation, identity theft, misrepresentation and even deception.

This deviant behavior was based on the disturbing fact that instead of simply monitoring pirates online, the law firm actually uploaded content itself to The Pirate Bay and elsewhere, which pushed Prenda Law well over the moral line. Although now defunct, Prenda is still under investigation by the FBI. The Pirate Bay co-founders Peter Sunde and Fredrik Neij confirmed they had been interviewed by the FBI on the question of verification of the accuracy of the IP-address logs. It seems that the FBI still have a keen interest in the case and could be close to their goal.

Apparently, the FBI has continued to seek additional information about Prenda Law and has sent out letters to attorneys who have represented alleged file-sharers. It is believed that the investigation is probably in its latter stages, and the FBI already has enough evidence to prosecute a case of wire and mail fraud.
