Google received infringement reports from copyright owners who try to make copyrighted content harder to find online. Google’s Transparency Report showed that the top 10 targets are focused on file-hosting, website unblocking and music downloads, with the search engine having received 70 million complaints about them in 2015.
Now copyright owners are pushing the Copyright Office in the US to consider a new “staydown” system, which would enable them to issue a DMCA notice to a website for a particular piece of content and be sure that it will never appear again on that site. It is quite understandable why copyright owners want so much to have it enforced.
But for now they are stuck with the existing system: last month, Google received requests for 87 million URLs to be removed from its indexes. Most of them target the same platforms: for example, only two websites – 4shared and GoEar – accounted for about 11 million takedowns. The remaining 76m reported URLs were from another 77,855 domains.
As for 2015, there is a similar picture: a small number of domains attracted disproportionate levels of complaints. The interesting thing is that the largest torrent trackers are not in the list. Instead, the first position is occupied by 4shared, a file-hosting website that ranked 434th in the world by Alexa. It is also ranked the 53rd most popular domain in Brazil, which is why it receives a disproportionate number of notices: the local anti-piracy outfit APDIF has filed 17 million complaints against it since 2013.
Other top positions are occupied by MP3 indexing site FlowXD, website unblocking service Unblocksit.es, file-hosting sites Chomikuj, Rapidgator and Uploaded, and music sites GoEar, Gooveo, Viciomp3 and Esamusica.
