|uTorrent accounts for more than 150 million active users a month, which makes it the most used BitTorrent client by far. Besides, the software also has dedicated community forums with tens of thousands of daily visitors, and more than 388,000 registered members. These forums have just been hacked, exposing the private details of its members. BitTorrent Inc. issued a warning saying that the hackers managed to grab the user database, and passwords should be considered compromised. This is why all the users are recommended to update their passwords – both on uTorrent forums and other sites if they are identical.
Although the vulnerability through which the hackers exploited didn’t originate at the uTorrent forums, it was indirectly compromised. The software maker posted security alert in the forums, but users haven’t been notified individually. BitTorrent’s social media accounts didn’t mention the massive security breach on uTorrent either.
So far, it is unclear what data has been compromised, but the security experts believe that the hashed passwords are likely compromised. uTorrent no longer reports the number of forum users, but it was about 390,000 members a few months ago and more that half a million posts.
Invision Power Board software is used on uTorrent forums and separate BitTorrent forums, which doesn’t appear to be compromised judging by the lack of a security notice.
The members of the forums can check on HaveIBeenPwned if their account details are compromised. It is known that about only 35,000 accounts have been compromised, not all 388,000.
