|Paul Mahoney, who ran a movie streaming website that brought him £300,000 in revenues and cost the entertainment industry millions, has failed to appeal his 4-year sentence. Northern Ireland's most senior judge decided that the man’s offending had been persistent and that he didn’t do any good by ignoring cease and desist notices.
Police in Northern Ireland raided Mahoney’s home 5 years ago. They were looking for evidence relating to streaming links website FastPassTV and forum BedroomMedia. The Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) believed that Paul Mahoney was behind their operation – the 30-year-old was arrested, and police seized equipment and cash totaling £83,000. It took 4 years for Mahoney to be charged: at first he pleaded not guilty but then changed his mind. In June 2015, he pleaded guilty to all charges against him, including allowing the public to view copyrighted movies without permission of the copyright holders, conspiracy, and earning up to £300,000 through advertising.
The plaintiffs initially claimed that Mahoney had cost the movie industry about £120 million but that amount was later cut tenfold. Last September, Paul Mahoney was found guilty and received 4 years in prison, half of which to be spent on license. Mahoney appealed the decision, but with no success. Northern Ireland’s most senior judge was unsympathetic to Mahoney’s arguments and claimed that it was a case of “very significant harm”, pointing out that Mahoney has been trying to avoid having his websites closed down since 2007, which was an aggravating factor. Besides, Mahoney ignored cease-and-desist notices issued by FACT, despite police arresting him twice.
