|Once Apple decided to offer its new customers a 3-month trial of its streaming service, Taylor Swift withheld her music from the platform. After millions of her fans magnified her protest, Apple had to make a rapid and uncharacteristic U-turn.
Now Taylor Swift cooperates with other musicians to put pressure on YouTube, urging the service to ensure better protections against copyright infringement and better pay for artists. However, the industry observers believe that this time she’s unlikely to win.
180 artists, including Swift, have published an open letter protesting about the DMCA, which allegedly allowed major tech firms to grow and generate huge profits by facilitating piracy while “artists’ earnings continue to diminish”. This letter was intended to add weight to negotiations between record labels and YouTube parent company, Google, over music licensing. The artists complained that YouTube streams have grown massively while revenues have grown very little.
Indeed, YouTube revealed that its payments to copyright owners and artists last year totaled to $740m, which is an increase of only 11% from year before, despite total views for music videos growing 132%. Accordingly, effective per-stream rates halved.
In the meantime, on Spotify artists get paid a small amount per stream, even when Spotify makes a loss. Of course, record labels feel they are owed more money. The difference is that YouTube’s model is advertising-based – in other words, it doesn’t guarantee any income for labels. And it is clear that Google is extremely unlikely to emulate Spotify, as the latter paid a massive 84% of its total revenues back to the music industry last year. Such move would make YouTube a completely unsustainable business.
This is why artists complain against the DMCA, or more precisely the act’s “safe harbor” guidelines, according to which YouTube can’t be held responsible for the copyright infringement of its users. Record labels therefore have to police YouTube for infringing videos that are uploaded more quickly than they can issue takedown requests.
On the other hand, the recent research found out that the impact of “safe harbor” is very small, with just 1 of 50 views coming from unauthorized user-generated uploads. 75% of all music video views are official.

Most of us hate Taylor and that's obvious but good artists should get paid and the good example of not doing so is my favorite is Blue and their present condition. They deserve it because they don't earn as much as big film actors. Love for Blue. Please purchase the albums of good and ur favorite artists and support them.

Musicians/Actors are paid ridiculous wages. They complain so profusely because they don't want to give it up. They've gotten used to it. Metallica, Beck, Radiohead are not going to change contemporary tech. Folks could care less that they're pissed and the only result of their complaints is loss of respect from their fans for bitching about a penny. Nothing will stop piracy. So much money is wasted in the attempt. Streaming attempts to mitigate piracy and artists still complain. Thus they're alienating fans who pirate their work and fans who stream their works: their illegitimate and legitimate fan bases. They should be forced to earn the bulk of their pay from working concerts. They want to eek out millions from us instead of hundreds of thousands. Shit, who wouldn't want to earn 100K a year just for writing/performing music? They want 100M a year and think it's unfair if they receive less. Taylor Swift has an enormous fan base of teeny boppers, but she can't stay young or relevant forever. She needs to concentrate on her shitty "music" and stop complaining.
I just went on youtube to listen some songs from taylor swift... seriously ??? what a crappy songs!!!
Now i understand why i never heard about her, she's might be know amount teenagers because she's blonde, but that's all, there nothing on her songs
She should look at the salaries teachers are being paid before whining about how much money she's making. She needs to reorder her priorities.

While I am by no means a Taylor Swift nut-hugger. I say "nut-hugger" only because she's dated every male in Hollywood under the age of 35 -- Twice. I feel that this move is a good one and [unlike her love-life] paved with at least a semblance of good intentions; mainly because of the significance of this statement, contained in the article: "payments to copyright owners and artists last year totaled to $740m ...an increase of only 11% from the year before, despite total views for music videos growing 132%."
That is.. a very... big f_cking deal.
Why is it such a big deal? In the 90's I watched music videos for practically free on VH1, MTV, BET, etc. How much should one get paid for people seeing a 3 minute video? It's all a huge scam, welcome to capitalism, and artists just want a bigger piece of the pie. If we really want to be doing something to change things for people who are ACTUALLY working their asses off and being underpaid, let's look at the thousands of Youtube content creators that get screwed, after producing their own films, because of people like Swift and others. It's easy to get paid more then you're part of the club. If Taylor isn't making enough money, she should look into being a stripper.
strippers need a body a dance talent.......i spot no talent in taylor lmao
btw @ 22 Bethenny , love your avatar lol.....taylor should look at it so she could learn to suck it up

If having a net worth of $250,000,000 instantly disqualifies any logical approach or right of concern upon which she may have; the $74,530,916,238 Google made last year equates to what exactly?
How about the little announcement a few months ago which stated that Google is going to be the first U.S. company to $1,000,000,000,000 in market value before the end of this year... yes, $1-TRILLION.
While I am not a fan of her music; it by no means empowers me with the flagrant disregard necessary to side with Google in this case.
Shut up Meg
