|Atlantic Records is trying to reveal the identity of a Reddit user who leaked a music track. The music label went as far as to take legal action against Reddit, complaining that a copy of the Twenty One Pilots song, Heathens, was posted to the website on 15 June, 9 days before the label was going to release it. The song was to be featured on the soundtrack to the upcoming Suicide Squad movie.
The New York label asked the court to issue a subpoena to force Reddit to hand over its user’s IP address, arguing that it was going to release the song the same day as pre-orders for the soundtrack, but the unexpected leak destroyed their rollout plans and cost them significant losses. Atlantic Records had entered into agreements with Apple and Spotify to secure “prominent promotional placement” and was going to release a music video as well.
This is a usual thing in the music industry to request IP addresses of suspects from ISPs. However, Reddit’s main feature is anonymity it provides. The company responds to lots of DMCA requests to take down copyrighted content. According to legal experts, the California-based company will be legally obligated to respond to the subpoena if the judge agrees, but it is not clear whether the person who uploaded the song is responsible for the leak.
The record label explained that the leaker could only be one of a few select people, because only the band members, their manager, the label executives or members of the radio field staff had access to the track. The studio is going to sue for damages.
Industry observers recall the 2015 case, where the Department of Justice brought a case against a Dutchman who leaked 3 movies before they were released in 2010. The Dutchman was accused of hacking into production companies’ hard drives and acquiring the movies.

|I like how it says nobody knew about it when they released a music video for it on Jun 21, 2016, which is before they said they would release it. "was posted to the website on 15 June, 9 days before the label was going to release it" so they were gonna release the song on June 24th, but the music video came out 3 days before that and on top of that, "one of a few select people, because only the band members, their manager, the label executives or members of the radio field staff had access to the track." What about the people making the music video? Surely they didn't make the music video after the leak in 6 days? I can't imagine they got the band together and all the special effects crew and editing and special effects done in 6 days.|
|This old fashion “prominent promotional placement” plan thing is what's killing them. When the album is done, release it. When the video is done, stream it. Don't hold on to it and try to get all ducks, geese, monkeys, and elephants in a row. The monkeys will flog the geese and ride off on the elephants with leaked copies leaving the ducks in tears.|
|yep. all of those things up there||
