Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN acts on behalf copyright holders. Its recent win is signing a €15,000 settlement with a prominent Usenet sharer, who uploaded over 18,000 music releases. As a result, the uploader informed fellow Usenet users that he's not going to upload anymore content. As for BREIN, it announced it would continue its quest against uploaders of illegal content.
Dutch anti-piracy group BREIN has been fighting against operators of infringing services for more than 10 years now. Users suffer as well, both random file-sharers and prolific uploaders. Recently, BREIN has gone after several torrent site uploaders, with varying success. It must be said that the group’s enforcement actions go further than BitTorrent alone, as BREIN keeps an eye on Usenet as well.
A few days ago, BREIN announced that it has settled a dispute with an active Usenet uploader, who is known for sharing more than 18,000 music albums, discographies, and compilations. The user agreed to settle for €15,000 and stop his activities. Otherwise, an additional fine up to €50,000 will be up.
The anti-piracy group used the message ID of NZB files to substantiate that the user was indeed the uploader. After the uploader received the court order, he posted a message online informing fellow users of stopping his uploading activities.
The file-sharing community has noticed that BREIN is targeting more and more uploaders. Although the Netherlands used to be a relative safe haven for file-sharers, thanks to BREIN this is no longer the case. It is known that the anti-piracy group has started to monitor IP-addresses of torrent swarms to identify the active file-sharers and consequently obtain their details through their ISPs.
