|Music leaked in advance of the commercial release is a real headache for its creators. When it happened to drum and bass legends Noisia, the band managed the problem with humor and without blaming fans.
In most cases, pre-release leaks are followed by extreme outbursts from music labels, which blame leakers and downloaders alike. On the one hand, this behavior is understandable, but there are better ways to get the message over, as Noisia showed it just a few days ago after their Outer Edges album leaked online 6 weeks early.
The band knew about the leak while setting up the stage for their first ever Outer Edges show. The band immediately made the whole album available to buy on its web store. Unfortunately, other digital platforms couldn’t move as quickly, so it took a few days to do the same. As for physical products, they couldn’t be moved due to production limitations, so they will appear according to the original schedule.
Noisia have chosen to stay close to their fans, running their own label (Vision Recordings) to give fans unprecedented access to their music. They also have done their best to make every track available everywhere – in other words, the content became accessible on various platforms the same day. This is why the leak forced them leap into action and change all their previous plans.
The band joked that even though they were unhappy about the leak, they were still really happy with the music. While this must’ve been a very disappointing leak, Noisia showed themselves to be real professionals: they didn’t cry but took actions to limit the impact of the leak. Their next album will probably take years to arrive, since this one took 6 years. But when it does arrive, the band won’t warn fans months in advance to avoid the same problem.
