A well-known European anti-piracy group BREIN has tracked down an active file-sharer who uploaded pirated music in a dedicated Facebook group. The uploader agreed to pay a €7,000 settlement and shut down the group. Facebook also shut down a few other similar groups.
BREIN has increasingly targeted The Pirate Bay and KickassTorrents uploaders and even one Usenet uploader. Now it obtained an ex-parte court order against a person who uploaded music to a cyberlocker and shared a link to a Facebook group. The latter allegedly did it as a hobby, gaining recognition for the links posted. The uploader agreed in the court to stop his activities both as a group administrator and as a member and pay a €7,000 settlement. He would face an additional fine up to €50,000 if he fails to stop uploading links to copyrighted content.
It must be noted that the €7,000 settlement is not that much if compared to those negotiated in previous cases closed by the Dutch anti-piracy group. BREIN explains that it normally bases the amount on the financial circumstances of the uploaders to not make it unbearable. However, the group didn’t reveal how it tracked down the uploader. Perhaps, he was exposed by his Facebook account. It is also unknown whether Facebook assisted in the investigation: the infringing group operated a while after the court decision and then was closed. At the same time, Facebook closed some more similar groups reported by BREIN, which continues targeting uploaders of all shapes and sizes and keeping its eyes on linking websites and cyberlockers.
