|The part of the worldwide web managing the so-called “address book” is no longer controlled by a US organization but by an international group. This move led to heated pre-election rhetoric, mainly from US Republican governors, who wanted to delay the transition claiming that it wasn’t in US interests.
Despite their efforts, “stewardship” of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has moved away from the US Department of Commerce and over to an international group. As such, the United States effectively loses grip on the control of the Internet. At the same time, key players and analysts believe that the new governance model for the ICANN will in fact strengthen the ability of the global community to challenge contentious decisions. Apparently, the community’s new powers to challenge board decisions and enforce decisions in court protect against any one party or group of interests from inappropriately influencing ICANN.
Some experts confirm that the ability to overrule the ICANN board was regarded as a very important development since it was the solution to overturn decisions that might be taken by a rogue board. Meanwhile, the symbolism of the move is as important as the practical changes in the control over the web. As you can understand, the Internet has long become more global and more critical to the lives of many people worldwide, and there has been increasing pressure on the United States to relinquish some managerial control, though ordinary users will hardly notice any difference. The industry observers regard to the IANA transition as to a great example of how to create a global governance model.
