Australian Movie Chief Compared Pirate Site Operators to Heroin Dealers

The co-chief of media company Village Roadshow has warned an international movie convention that operators of pirate websites are similar to people selling heroin. He called for a multi-pronged approached to tackle illegal downloading and suggested to start fining persistent pirates.

Speaking at the Australian International Movie Convention, the Village Roadshow chief launched a fresh attack on online piracy, accusing pirate site operators of terrible crimes, while file-sharers were accused of undermining the livelihoods of creators.

So, the Village Roadshow chief believes that the main problem is that websites facilitating copyright “theft” are not just very dangerous places to visit but are operated by equally dangerous people – “the same type of people that sell heroin and only care about revenue, making money blitzing children with advertising.”

In the meantime, 75% of people acknowledge that piracy is theft but recognized that many downloaders have no idea that they violate the law because “dangerous” pirate sites are still open for business due to government inaction.

The Village Roadshow chief also believes that website blocking and making more content legally available cannot solve the problem to the end. The group has also decided to take action against the repeat infringers. It promised the fine wouldn’t be ransom but a few hundred dollars, which would make most people think twice before file-sharing.

At the same time, the age group of pirates presents a problem: according to statistics, there has been some decline in piracy amongst Australian adults in 2015.

Blulotus avatarThey need to stop blaming the torrenting websites for their financial problems. They are losing money because of the trash they are trying to pass off as entertainment. They need to embrace those who torrent and realise their potential. The old ways are obsolete...its time to embrace a new way, a new generation.

No avatarThey just totally ignore the concept that if they weren't getting it free, they wouldn't watch the movie at all so they're losing absolutely zero; in fact if they like it after seeing it for free, they may recommend it to someone, or buy the dvd/bluray or decide they want to see it on a cinema screen..... so at worst they lose nothing, but more likely they're actually making money they wouldn't have otherwise made.
