|A year ago, Federal Police in Brazil launched Operation Blackbeard aimed at taking down the most popular pirate website in Latin America – MegaFilmesHD.net. The site was launched in 2010 and mainly served the Portuguese-speaking market with reported 60m monthly visitors. At the time, police made several arrests, including the presumed operators of the streaming portal, and seized 4 cars, some cash and bank accounts. The Motion Picture Association of America had reported the site to the United States Trade Representative just a month earlier.
Now the authorities continue the operation and launch the second phase of Operation Blackbeard. It resulted in targeting a so-called “criminal gang” dedicated to profiting from online infringement. Police have executed 7 search warrants in 4 states and arrested a total of 5 people, targeting 3 major local streaming websites.
The first was Filmesonlinegratis.net, which has been operating since 2009, ranking the 57th most-visited website in the country with 36m monthly visitors over the past 6 months and 11,000 titles streamed. By the way, it is still online, even despite the raid.
The second was Megafilmeshd20.org, the 119th most-visited portal in Brazil with 17m monthly visitors over the past 6 months and 6,000 unauthorized titles. This one went offline after the raid.
Finally, Armagedomfilmes.biz accounted for 11m monthly visits and ranked the 179th in the country. Its domain appears to have been seized by the authorities.
All the targeted websites were generating revenue from advertising. Altogether, they received around 0.75bn visits each year, making available thousands of titles focusing on the Brazilian, Portuguese and Japanese markets.
