|The US tech giant has dismissed the European Commission’s charges that Google abused the market dominance of its Android OS to prevent rivals from competing with alternative software and services.
The European Commission filed charges against Google a few months ago, which could entail a fine of up to $7.4bn, or 10% of Google’s global revenue. The charges center on “unjustified restrictions and conditions” placed on mobile device manufacturers that prevented them from choosing alternative default search engines and browsers.
However, Google believes that Android hasn’t hurt competition, but rather expanded it. Thus far, Android is the most flexible mobile platform in the world, which is able to balance the needs of all manufacturers and operators, app developers and consumers. Google point out that upsetting this balance would lead to increase in prices, hampering innovation, limiting choice and competition.
Google also didn’t agree with the Commission’s view that Android does not compete with Apple’s iOS used in iPhones and iPads. It claims that its agreements with smartphone manufacturers allow Google to distribute its own OS for free and continue development of the platform, if such agreements insist that a suite of Google apps be pre-installed on smartphones and tablets with some positioned on the homescreen when a device is first started.
It is clear that Google’s prospects of earning revenue from advertising could fall if its apps were not pre-loaded on mobile devices. At the same time, users are free to delete most of them and replace them with the apps of their choosing.
At the moment, Google is also investigated by the EC over its Shopping search engine feature and its AdSense text advertising service (which it also dismissed).

|People want to run their computers , not have the computers run them.. There is so much software(not to mention spyware, etc) that is a huge issue today. Gotta let people choose what to put on their devices instead of confusing people and spending days getting rid of stuff out of the box. Blame all the spyware and back doors. Google(part of NSA) is the devil.|
|Why isn't Google being forced to explain all the shitty apps that they force upon you that you can't get rid of?|
Google Play Movies & TV
Google Play News
Google Play Music
Google Talk Back
None of these has is required for Android to function. The problem is is that not everyone can afford a phone with 32GB storage and this crap, plus Android itself takes up 5.5-6GB.
