US “Alt-Right” Activists’ Twitter Account Suspended

Twitter has suspended the accounts after announcing its crackdown on hate speech. The suspended accounts included those of the white-nationalist National Policy Institute, its magazine Radix and its head Richard Spencer, along with other prominent alt-right figures.

9b0179fed75c00159f2649b26d2c9296.th.jpg

Richard Spencer described the suspension as “corporate Stalinism”. Indeed, his ban is particularly notable, because he had a verified account on Twitter – the badge the company only assigns to noteworthy accounts in order to prove they are who they say they are. The industry watchers pointed out that Twitter has stripped accounts of their verified status in the wake of abuse in the past, like in the case of an editor at far-right news outlet Breitbart this year. However, Twitter has previously never acted so conclusively against an account it had once given a badge of approval.

The suspension came the same day that the company announced a new push against hate speech and harassment on its service, introducing new features meant to allow users to control which content shows up in their notifications. Besides, the company confirmed a change to its training process for Twitter moderators, along with a new set of tools for reporting hate speech. Like Facebook that cracked down on fake news, Twitter was seen by its users as finally realizing that it was facilitating and emboldening the far right, but only after the US presidential election.

In the meantime, former Twitter users, whose accounts were suspended or who quit Twitter in protest, may join a new social network named Gab and advertising itself with the slogan “Free speech for everyone”.

No avatarWhile this doesn't really have to do with "right" or "left," the fact that far-right-leaning people tend to be white supremacists, homophobes, Islamophobes, and misogynists makes it necessary for Twitter to take down accounts used to spread this kind of hate speech. I applaud Twitter for doing at least a tiny bit to help prevent minorities from being bullied.

No avatarApparently, you've never seen the ridiculous number of twitter users calling for the deaths of white people. I seriously doubt they are on the "right", yet they haven't been suspended at all.

masterfab101 avatarHave zero issues with them taking down accounts that have truly posted "hate" speech or calls for violence but who decides what is hate and what is just free speech. The fact of the matter is everyone is entitled to their opinion and they have the right to share that opinion whether you personally agree with it or not.Social media sites also have the right to determine what is and what isn't acceptable for their business but it is a very slippery slope. As far as "fake" news goes again I have no issue with them removing stories that can not be verified and are obvious fraudulent but I don't see them going after the tinfoil hat alien abduction stories or stopping the ones where bigfoot carried off and molested someones grandma. The "alt left" also tend to blame the legitimate win of Trump on "fake" news but the biggest fake news were the poles and the media effort by the mainstream to smear Trump and protect Hillary who happens to be one of the most corrupt politicians to ever run for president.Everyone needs to get off the political correct fence and start facing facts...the truth doesnt change just because you dont like to hear what it imply's

No avatarFreedom isn't pretty but it's better than the alternative. I don't want my speech censored and neither should you. People seem to have forgotten that to truly believe in freedom is to defend the rights of those you disagree with including speech.

No avatarPeople insist on forgetting that free speech has never, ever, applied to social media. The entire point of "free speech" is that the government cannot suppress it. It's perfectly allowable for commercial entities, non government entities, or individuals to block it as they see fit. I can boot lame ass racist scum out my front door whenever I feel like it. Those entities certain folk want to revile (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) need to serve a global diverse audience - the source of any profit their companies make. So, if you expect them to allow US centric alt-right, white nationalist, racist, and other speech to stand unchallenged, you have to be extremely foolish or have a severe misunderstanding of the US constitution. Facebook would die tomorrow if the US were its sole market.

Hate to break out reality, but the majority of people on the planet are not white. They're not even Christian. That sort of speech might be free from government interference, but that doesn't obligate anyone else to put up with it.

suedwestgabber avatarWell done! The Alt-Right is a disease that needs to be eliminated. I strongly encourage further steps on shutting down anything to do with right-wing populism or nationalism.
This right-wing propaganda which is fashionable is bad influence on gullible and weak-minded people and especially on our children.
Do believe users such as EverettHitch ---> they spread lies.

suedwestgabber avatarHmm... tennvol865 I don't see the progressives or center-leftists spewing out racist and hateful propaganda. And if you believe they do, then you've been bought by the finger-pointing, accusing and hate-filled right wing propaganda. In other words you've been brainwashed, but the brainwashing suits you since its your mindset to begin with. Right?
Torrenting won't stop. Don't be shoving fear you've made up into users here.
Another thing - this world is interwoven. I know imbeciles like you would love to have this planet the way it was before the airplane, but no. And don't be mentioning one-world govt., that's just ridiculous and you know it!

What's an "islamophobe"? You liberal thought police just love making up words to label dissenters with. You lot don't step up & label those who heap scorn & derision upon christians & their religion "christianophobes" do you, considering that 9 times out of 10 its you lot doing the scorning & deriding? It's hilarious how you leap to the defense of a barbaric, medieval religion whose adherents actually execute homosexuals, adulterers, apostates & "witches". It wasn't christians who recently arrested & charged a rape victim in the UAE under sexual immorality laws after she reported being gang raped. There's no such word as "islamophobe" & no one who uses it as if it does carry meaning deserves to have their opinions taken seriously.

robbow123 avatarTwitter is a private company not the government. It can decide on the guidelines for people who use the service. Racists are free to get their own website and publish whatever ugly speech they want.

Freedom of speech is a right. But it does not mean you can use that Freedom in privately owned places.
If a comedian on open mike night, went up and spouted a racist rant. The club is free to never have him back. Twitter can set its own rules. If people want to spout Hate Speech they should got Facebook as the most heinous things are said about certain groups and if one reports it, they get back a statement that it doesn't contravene Facebook's community standards. If Facebook were an geographical community. I wouldn't want to live there

robbow123 avatarDear Weasel, Phobe means one fearing averse to or dislikes something or someone. When you put a noun in front of it, it means that is what they fear or dislike. It is not made up.

And remind me who murdered witches in Salem. And those countries that do heinous things should be condemned and be pressured to change. And remind me who killed these people Harvey Milk oh right it was catholic Dan White who only got 5 years. And didn't Richard Lee Bednarski harass and kill 2 gay men in 1988 in Texas, the judge said the victims were homosexuals who wouldn't have been killed if they "hadn't been cruising the streets" for men. The judge Jack Hampton was not Muslim. What about Russell Arthur Henderson and Aaron James McKinney, They grabbed Matthew Shepherd, and tortured, beat severely, tied him to a fence, and abandoned him; he was found 18 hours after the attack and succumbed to his injuries less than a week later Fortunately A Good Christian Judge sentenced them to Life in Prison. I don't blame all catholics or protestants for the actions of some. Every Group has evil in it. I don't think everyone of Russian ancestry are horrible because Putin is a dictator and kills people who criticize or run against him. And Individual needs to be considered based on their own words and deeds, not the words and deeds who have a superficial similarity to them. I am Anglican which is a Canadian Episcopalian, but I like people who are people who say, think and do good things. I don't like bad people who do bad things. All the best to you

+htttx: In which world are you living? Globally and on Twitter, whites and rightists are the minority. And as long as I do not see that the accounts of "non-white supremacists, heterophobes, Christianophobes, and misandryists" are removed, too, your call for discrimination against "white supremacists, homophobes, Islamophobes, and misogynists" bears no merit to be considered.

No avatarThis is what our civilized ancestors didn't do the last time that hate-mongers gained a political stronghold. By banning these specific accounts, the good, peaceful people of the world are issuing a formal declaration that we will not allow the re-invigoration of historically catastrophic social theories. Theories that lead, I remind you, to the death of 60 million people. We are not doomed to repeat our mistakes if we recognize them for what they are when the re-appear.

No avatarAnd will anyone acknowledge that Democrats filibustered the civil rights act, along with Robert Bird, known KKK member, who has been publicly praised by Hillary Clinton? That the republican party was literally started as the anti-slave party? Does anyone on here understand what 'right' and 'left' even refer to? Leftism equates with more government control (federalists, communists, socialists), while moving to the right equates with less government control(corporatists, libertarians, anarchists). I'd also like to point out that Alt-right doesn't mean racist...racist means racist! Down with racism...of all kinds...in the open light, not in the shadowy rooms of corporate board rooms....social media= social engineering

robbow123 avatarJoJo you should read the news from various sources. Twitter has taken down at least 125,000 ISIS related acounts this year and are taking more down when they pop up. Google Isis twitter accounts and see how many stories there are about Twitter doing that.

As for the filibuster you are right but only partially. Committed to the filibuster effort were the powerful Senators Richard Russell, Thurmond, Robert Byrd, William Fulbright and Sam Ervin. Russell started the filibuster in late March 1964, and it would last for 60 working days in the Senate. I know some of those were democrats maybe all. But what the uniting element was they were from Southern states.

Trying to stop them were a democrat and a republican Behind the scenes, two opposing leaders were working to find a way to get 67 votes: the Democratic Senate whip, Hubert Humphrey and the Senate Minority Leader, Everett Dirksen of Illinois.

As for a history lesson. Both democrats and republicans voted against the civil rights act. It was not decided by party lines, those from the southern states voted against it. Those from northern and western states voted for it. Easy to research that as well. I even found a chart showing name party where they came from and their vote.

After that Republicans got most of the vote in the south. As democrats changed parties and the Republicans began their southern strategy of appealing to white southerners.
The GOP were the party of Lincoln, but that all changed in the 60's
The sad thing about the right and there is plenty to be sad about the left too. But when you mention less government control. That is except the conservative republicans that want to control women, gay people, the ability of minorities to vote.

Social Media equals what you make of it. Too many spend their lives hooked to it.

No avatarEducation level is probably indirectly proportional to the amount one leans to the far right. Inner peace comes with the knowledge that all humans diversified from common ancestors in Africa... all lifeforms on this planet evolved from bacterial microorganisms some 3 billion years ago... atoms in all of the known Universe once begot from a singular compressed state around 13.7 billions years ago... we are one... love oneself.

No avatarHistory lesson? " I know some of those were democrats maybe all" mmmk. Filibuster was 18 Dems and 1 Republican, but you are right one whole time, they were all Southern (except Byrd, but west Virginia....is the south). Nice. And Robert Byrd continued to serve as a democrat, and a racist, until he died. The republican party has introduced the emancipation proclamation, introduced several civil rights act bills, including the 15th and 19th amendments which give the right to men of all races and women the right to vote, anti-lynching and jim crow...So how does the republican party bash women and prevent minorities from voting ( I agree on lbgt, no marriage is not cool) ? And can you name 10 republicans that were democrats after the civil rights act? Just FYI I'm not a republican, never voted for one in my life. Both parties are corrupt, but I call bullshit on the repubs being the only racist ones. Eugenics in America show both parties worst colors. But Jacksonian ideology is "paternal white father/ big brother is going to spoon feed you, cause you too dumb to make your own decisions and take care of yourself" still persists. The democratic party is depicted in a cartoon in Wikipedia as a continuation of the Confederacy - with a KKK hat to boot. But I'm ranting now blah blahablaha

No avatarAnd as far as ISIS, I was talking about this ...."Twitter's “tweet threat” team, which has tripled in size just this year, has shut down 10,000+ ISIS accounts in 2015. Some of those 10,000 accounts have been shut down multiple times but keep coming back" - ijr.com 2015
