Malusi Gigaba, a Deputy Minister of Home Affairs is going to introduce a total ban on the distribution of digital legal porn in order to protect the women’s and children’s rights, citing such countries as Yemen, the UAE, and Australia of what is possible if the government decides to approve this Pornography Bill.

There appear more and more of those so-called democratic governments all over the world that criticize China for implementing its Internet filter while simultaneously developing strategies for introducing their own filtering systems.

Australia should be mentioned as an example because of its Minister for Communications who keeps dragging the country towards a voluntary-obligatory filter, which is supposed for some reason to protect children from peer-to-peer traffic, gambling and online gaming. So now it seems like South Africa is one of the latest countries to mull filtering the web. Malusi Gigaba required the Law Reform Commission of the country to check out if it is possible to ban all ways of distribution of digital porn, somehow comparing the filter to cars seat belts and brakes. He believes that there’s no any reason for the Internet not to be provided with restrictive build-in features.

The Minister has got the idea from JASA (the Justice Alliance of South Africa), a group of churches, individuals and companies, committed to straggling for justice and moral standards in the community. Their draft is titled “Internet and Cellphone Pornography Bill”, and they cite UAE, Yemen, and Australia to show an example of what can happen if the government decides to act.

The Bill includes a demand for ISPs and mobile operators to prevent their subscribes from distributing any porn, unless they are willing to be hold liable and face a fine or imprisonment for up to 5 years, or both. Providers are also required to report anyone caught facilitating the distribution of porn across the web.

Since best interests of children outweigh the freedom of expression, the JASA believes the law is constitutional. Moreover, they think much of the porn content broadcast online also violates the rights of women to dignity, equality and protection from hate speech.

Although it’s doubtful that the country possesses the technical capacity sufficient enough for filtering the Internet, it is still a worrying event.

fromage9747 avatarhonestly, South africa has such bigger problems but yet they always gotta annoy the little people pleasures. Women and children get rapped all the blinking time everyday in this country, why don't they try and sort out those problems before concetrating on rubbish. This so called democratic country is a joke, the politicians all sit on their fat asses in parliament, busy farting and picking their noses just like the Apes they are.

Stickmann avatarI totally agree to obliterate child porn and the freaks that get there jolly of it, they if caught should be should have cruel and unusual punishment inflicted on them then shot, but to censor adult xxx is not right as it is our right to watch or not, our decision, so yes filter all the sick shit and let people watch a good adult skin flick, Well done SaM

shido641 avatarThis country has bigger problems but our government wants to ban porn...WOW. See and this is why our country cant get anywhere. They would rather act on stupid internet stuff then fight crime such as theft, rape, drugs, and the list goes on. I'm not trying to put my country down (It does a good job on it's on) im just saying there's worse things to worry about then some internet porn.
