The Twilight Saga: “Eclipse” Caused Major Ant ipiracy Effort

Online piracy was hit on the last day of June by seizure of several websites accused of copyright infringement. The accusations were brought by copyright authorities. Some of the accused sites offered unauthorized copies of the new Twilight movie “Eclipse”, placing an ad “watch “Eclipse” for free.”

The third movie of saga has had an incredible opening, with grossing over $30 million from its single midnight show on June, 30th. This made it hold the new record within the industry as biggest midnight gross ever. However, next morning one could see the other side of that coin: the pitch “Watch “Eclipse” movie online for free” was ranked in the top 10 search terms online.

Walt Disney Studios announced a battle that morning – box-office money against illegal online downloads – in California, right near the heart of the entertainment industry hurt by online piracy. The announcement said that operation “In Our Sites” was going to be a coordinated effort by US ICE and NIPRCC, aimed at identifying and closing down sites engaging in illegal activities.

The operation began from the seizure of several domain names of sites offering first-run films, usually within mere hours of their releases in theatres. Visitors to those websites are going to face a page featuring the logos of the FBI explaining the situation. At least, that’s what officials said.

The seizures were carried out after undercover agents downloaded different fresh movies from the accused websites. The list included fresh releases of “Sex and the City 2” and “Iron Man 2.” In addition, residential search warrants came alongside with the seizure in several areas, including New Jersey, Washington, and New York.

After the abovementioned announcement was made in regards to “Eclipse”, some industry’s executives voiced out their opinion over the reason why Americans should care. The main arguments were, of course, money and jobs losses.

The results of the action taken will be estimated by its ability to get sustained over time, because it may turn into yet another big stir by the government, followed by dropping this initiative out of sight. However, most observers agree that such attempts to stop piracy will most likely result in considerable expense passed on to the consumers (whom else?)

Although it might seem right to Pattinson and Stewart’s fans to punish people stealing from their gods, they have to admit that finally the audience will be the one most hurt in this situation.

moviefreak24 avatarIve just seen this movie in the theater yesterday. Its not a surprise that the studio etc. goes out on a limb to protect their investment. Normally one can state that whoever downloads a movie, is not gonna pay to see that same movie in the theater. That means that the more people download the movie, the more money the studio loses. I download movies just like the rest of you, what else would I be doing on this site?! But that doesnt mean I never vistit a theater anymore. Downloading movies is just convinient, if not a whole lot more. Most of us dont even stop and think about it. But it does in fact harm the industry. Because had this movie not been available on the internet, EVERYONE would go to the theater. And thats what they want. People have to understand that..

moviemanmills avatarHow many times did anyone ever go to the movies, spent $30 to see the best parts were the commericals on TV. I agree I also go to the theaters, but Hollywood seems to be full of themselves. Laser Discs, VHS, DVD's, and now Blu Ray, with 3 D on it's way. We have drug deals going on, shootings, rape, murder, and the cops are busting some guy for selling movies; what are they paying the local goverments for enforcement??????

pjth avatarlet me say this, I download simply because i have a family of 4 and going to the movies ends up costing me $80.- So I download to check if it is worth the $80.- if I like what I see i take the family to the movies. I'm sick of being made a sucker, and spend good money on a lousy movie that has all his best spots in the trailer and the rest is plain unwatchable. I guess Hollywood is angry because P2P has stopped many of us to be suckers.
I also have friends that have an autistic child and it is impossible to go to the movies. without P2P their live would be a living hell as all the hype created in the commercials makes the child want to see the movie but because of its condition will never be able to enter the movies.
To many bad movies in overpriced cinemas drive people to P2P and honestly if i buy a blue ray who is going to stop me from lending it to my friends?

NaTaS avatarThat explains it all. Thats why California is dead ass broke, because of file sharing. It has a little to do with file sharing, the state is the worst in this great nation at running a budget, its full of Hollywood types, porn stars and political stagnation.
Yes some amount of money is lost by file sharing, but what can be done? At this point if you shut down the net you shut down the world, its as if we have all created our own sky-net scenario. Net inter-dependency is here. I wonder how long before were those fat slobs from Wall-E sometimes. Or is the linked in generation just "them dame kids and their rock n roll", my grandparents bitched about as they work their obnoxious red ropers and square danced to my horror?

JLick avatarQuit crying damnit. If theaters costed less, I'm 99% sure we'd all be there on the first weekend releases. But no, overpriced tickets and concessions is one big reason I hate going.

Anyways, if a movie is good, I'll pay to go see it.

Everyone who commented here, \\o// to you

And capn, I started roflmao when I read that xDDD

JLick avatarOops, didn't mean to say 'quit crying damnit' to you all, moreso to the overspending production studios and overpaid actors/actresses

phoenixcm avatarYep, watched a ripped copy. Still taking the family to see it at the theatre tomorrow. ( Theatre is 120 kilometres away.) And will still buy the blue-ray to complete the set. So they're making at least $250.00 outta my wallet. Not counting the tshirts and crap my daughter's going to want or the priceof the books in the first place. WTF are they crying about.

zarathusa88 avatari definitely agree with moviemanmills...i download movies to...but i do go to the theathers and buy dvd's too...but stil...the goverment should concentrate on drug dealers,murderers..and corporate financial games that cost them much more money than some movie copy shared on the net

moviefreak24 avatar@ pjth: Well you take a chance when you go see a movie. It might be good or it might not be. Same as when you go to a restaurant and you order something youve never had before.

4uckAuthority avatarwell....i seen the first of the series in theater's, sitting through that only made me realize that i'm not going to watch the other two period, i haven't seen the second....and the third well...my life would go on if it was never made. i only say these things because it's their fault they lost my money, and even "watch for free" wouldn't get me to watch the other two. maybe if the werewolves looked like werewolves instead of stand ins for the narnia animal crew, i may have took to it. i still say these industries need to figure out a way to roll with progress instead of trying to hold it back. they can stop making movies at any time and choose to make no money.... but they continue to do so because, well lets face it $30 million midnite showing isn't something to cry about...at least until the next day when they could make more off of the people who chose not to go see it.

menahunie avatar4uckAuthority - I agree these movies are plain crap.
They have no plot and nothing worth paying allot of money to see. But I bet all the teeny boppers ( young teenage girls ) would disagree very strongly because they want to watch their "Hot" male actor and it doesn't matter they can't act worth crap; only to show sex appeal.. These "girls" and they are girls would think nothing of climbing in bed with these people and having their baby.
Hey you don't believe me? JEEZ Just look at the picture in this article; THAT EXPLAINS IT ALL. The look on that girls place would have you believing she just won the powerball lottery for 500 million dollars...

Brynn217 avatarUmmm.. ok, just looked it up.. today is the 9th day of the release for this movie, They have made $176 Million so far and they are headed into their second weekend..

Umm.. somehow I DONT FEEL SORRY FOR THEIR LOSSES DUE TO PIRACY! I work as a construction Electrican, my job is basically, build something then get laid-off.. I am on a lay-off cycle right now, this one may last 6 months for all I know.. its a nice vacation.. but I do not have money for my family to go see all these movies... and then they wanna bitch about loosing money... I bet they dont have to worry about how to pay their Gas & Electric...
