The owner of Canadian record label says that the creative industry seems to be not creative enough to work out how to distribute copyrighted works online without being hurt. She also points out that when a person buys a music CD he’s just buying a license to listen to it.
11060-30010-121x200.jpg

Loreena McKennitt, a Canadian artist, composer, and Quinian Road record label owner, emphasizes the negative effects the piracy has on all the players of the entertainment industry – from performers and composers to popcorn vendors and printers.

The more number of unauthorized downloads increases, the more sales drop, she says. Moreover, it influences not only the composers and designers providing true creative works, but also a complex ecosystem of the expert part, including printers, studio engineers, technicians and administrative staff. All these people have been affected by widespread theft and distribution of copyrighted content online.

Artists today complain they find it more and more difficult to justify working out new ways for their consumers to enjoy their music online, because piracy makes them doubt that they will ever compensate their investment. Loreena McKennitt suggests the government to ensure the artists will be protected from doubts in the capitalist market. This can only be done by reforming copyright legislation intended to eliminate illegal competition.

Seems like McKennitt joined the team of those who can’t understand that all these measures wouldn’t turn users into paying customers. Therefore, they will most likely have little effect on peer-to-peer networks. The only result it can get is pushing people to shift from a less secure way of sharing files online to a more secure one. But Loreena McKennitt goes on, talking about the only real way for artists today to make up their losses, if not mention hawking T-shirts. That is touring all the time, which, however, is viable only in a limited number of specific situations and, in addition, creates huge challenges for artists having family obligations. Moreover, now parts of the touring industry also face their business erode.

The most surprising conclusion she made was noting how even popcorn sellers are doing their best to just stay alive. If there was no P2P, people would go to theaters more often and buy popcorn more, thus giving a chance to corn growers to make more money and buy better farm equipment! Since now you know that pirates steal from farmers, too.

Mythothian avatarThat's crap. I buy popcorn at the store to watch my pirated movies at home. Then I don't have to worry about sticky floors and I can have a smoke while watching.

menahunie avatarWELL - YOUR FULL OF CRAP FOR STATING A LIE: Loreena McKennitt, a Canadian artist, composer, and Quinian Road record label owner, emphasizes the negative effects the piracy has on all the players of the entertainment industry – from performers and composers to popcorn vendors and printers.

How is this a lie? Well very simple - she's most likely composes crap and people don't listen to crap..

Take RADIOHEAD - they prove what is being stated is just plain SH*T..
RadioHead released their album on the internet and ALL THEY ASKED WAS THE PERSON PAY WHAT THEY THOUGHT IT WAS WORTH - THEY DID to the Tune ( A little pun there ) of TEN MILLION DOLLARS IN ONE WEEK..

What6 is being missed is the crappy "artists" who continue to put out crap will be gone or they had better get their act together and start putting out quality "ART"..

dubbsizzle avatari agree with you 100% menahunie.........i don't think we hurt the industry at all. we are all consumers and I am sure we all pay for what we like. But we like to try before we buy most the time. There has been many of movies and cd's that I have come across that look good on the cover but end up being crap. And there have been many of movie I have seen thanks to this site I liked so much I had to go see it in theaters when If i didn't I would have never spent my hard earned money on the movie anyways. Bottom line is they just need to learn how to make money off p2p and they will do better than ever. They just wont cause it takes certain people out of the loop.

dubbsizzle avatarAnd on another point.........sales are down because the economy has tanked! Sales are down everywhere. Fast food chains are seeing a 5 to 10% decrease every month in sales. So if people cant afford to go get some cheap hamburgers how can they afford a night at the theater? Are they still going? Yes! But just not as often and being more selective on what they see. I too have scaled back my spending on all media not because I can get them for free but because we have to conserve also just to make it by during these tough times. Movie industry just don't think they should be affected by the economy.

I prefer the free downloads better then wasting all that money good movie or not heh its a rip-off!! And yes you can buy a whole box of microwave popcorn for 3.00 and heck 8.00 for one bucket at the theater.

soulex avatarPeople like this think they are smart, but are actually stupid. They are stupid because they think they are smarter than the average Joe. Popcorn sales are down because they charge 10 Bucks for a small bucket. People are not stupid, they will not pay for something that isnt worth it. I even pay the over priced bullshit sometimes. 3 Bucks at Walmart and I have a whole family sized box.

Whats really going on? These guys with all the money, trying very hard to rob you legally. How do we over price something and still force you to buy it? We make everything illegal. Pretty soon you wont be able to buy a screw driver, without someone saying, you dont own the screwdriver your just leasing it.

Rasax avatarYou gotta wonder at some of these morons "pirates are putting popcorn venders out of business" oh please it wouldn't have anything to do with the fact most of us can make better popcorn for a fraction of the price they charge for that dried up rubbish at the cinema. Coming next from this pathetic lot "P2P found to be responsible for cot death, global warming (all that burning of disks has to contribute), and cancer. Seriously if there was a serious argument against P2P this isn't it all i see are a bunch of company crybabys moaning because now we can find out stuff is crap before we buy and most of the so called talent is too damn lazy to put the time and effort in to make something worth paying for.

Rasax avatarWell first you take the lazy route and buy some microwave popcorn :) then you put a bar and a half of lindt 70% in a glass bowl on top of a saucepan of boiling water and wait till it melts at the same time you take a block of old fashioned soft toffee and do the same as the chocolate. When they have both melted you mix them together open your bag of micro popcorn and tip it in shake that sucker for a good half to one minute and wollah far better popcorn then you can buy at crappy cinemas unless your one of these faddy non sugar merchants in which case i dunno chuck a load of salt in there instead :D.

menahunie avatarSaveIt4later - TRUE to a point as well as Terrillcase655 also.
Unless you have a wrap 9 broadband connection to "test" a file at a size rate of a DVD 8-9 GIG or a Blu-Ray up to 30 gig in size YOU WILL GO SEE IT if it is any good or buy it. There are great files and posters do a damn fine job of encoding; but a quality ver. size is a very big issue. Most P2P'ers don't have FIOS or a 11mbps line like some of use do.
I have bought a whole hell of allot of movies by "trying" before buying it. I won't go the a theater because it is just too expensive; explain to me MPAA why a family of four has to spend a minimum of $100.00 U.S. to go to a theater? I don't just count the ticket prices at $20.00 each $20x4+ parking 3.00 + snackbar goodies 20-30.00+ 100-120.00.
Hell we went to see Book of Eli - WHAT CRAP; the frackin trailer was better than the whole stupid movie - NEVER AGAIN as I stood up in the theater and screamed NEVER AGAIN WILL I PAY FOR THIS SHIT.. I really did that and there were echos in the theater also. Ever notice the movie trailers are most time better than the WHOLE MOVIE?
But to the point - the MPAA and RIAA do to you and I the CRAP and overpricing is BECAUSE THEY CAN.. Mnay posters complain they are ripping us off AND THEY ARE. Want to know how they can? BECAUSE THEY HAVE A MONOPOLY.. SAME AS BIG OIL DOES WITH OIL AND ENERGY.
Thing is a MONOPOLY is illegal - except for the powers to be MPAA and RIAA including the crooked politicians - REMEMBER THIS THIS NOVEMBER GET OFF YOUR BUTT AND VOTE..
Back to the point - These people the MPAA and RIAA see their MONOPOLY starting to slip away - the strangle hold they have had on you and I; INCLUDING THE "ARTISTS"..
How is this slipping away? Simple.. BECAUSE IF THE INTERNET AND P2P'ers..
ALL THE MPAA AND RIAA ARE? IS THE MIDDLE MEN IN EVERYTHING WE SEE AND HEAR... They are nolonger are going to be able to control this and THAT SCARES THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF THEM - ALSO ALL THE MONEY THEY STAND TO LOSE, like the "artists Radiohead and others bypassing them and going direct to you and I.
Time are a changing and things are going to get very interesting in the next decade..

KazzGirl avatarSeriously! There are movies that can only be seen on the big screen with great sound in order for them to be properly enjoyed. ALL movie lovers would pay to go and see that kind of movie. But honestly. There is an industry out there that is just generating crap! All downloaders do is recognise the crap and not pay out good money to go to the cinema and watch it. Other than that most of us, if not all, pay to go see the decent movies that are not just another piece of generated crap. These hollywood wanna be's are being stupid and not looking at their own faults and blaming us for their failures. Sales of tickets and DVD releases of the good movies prove this.

As far as music is concerned - as previously mentioned - RADIOHEAD proved all the music producers wrong who say p2p is killing the music industry, by selling millions of downloads generating them millions of dollars in one week alone. p2p users are a discerning audience the same as any other, and most of us pay for what we like and respect. What these idiot producers of music and film need to learn is how to garner our dollars rather than blame us for their short comings. If they were to concentrate more on generating a decent product and not spend their time on the losing battle of trying to stop p2p, then maybe they would consitently produce a product that we would want to pay for to see and hear. These producers need to alter their thinking and realise we are the future of music and film sales and learn to work with us, not against us.

CaptCosmo avatarI nixed the theater years ago. More than half the movies were trash and the cost for a family of five was outrageous. I'm careful with my downloads. Audio quality at times is more important to me than the picture. As an audiophile for 45 years, my audio capabilities are above most theaters. Throw in a big 1080p and who needs a theater any longer? I remember when the industry tried to stop DVD rentals because it would make theaters obsolete and force them out of business. You wanna stay in business?? Lower your prices and quit making garbage movies like the Book of Eli, Robin Hood & Wolfman...

Now to the important part: As a Neck & Throat Cancer Survivor, I can no longer chew & swallow popcorn. My question: In the past, when I did buy popcorn, did it just come with a "license" to eat it or did it include the right to digest it as well?

I would rather save my money for other things then buy dvd's or spend a 100.00 at the movies or spend $20.00 on a cd thats just me.... I can buy 100 CDR discs for $10.00 and 100 DVDR discs for $20.00 .... Dont mess with blue-ray I am satisfied with dvd....I am a simple person :) I dont care if the picture is so clear that they clame on blu-ray that ya can basically see the actor's pimple lol dvd is fine with me

Yes if it is good i go to the cinema to watch it but i don't have the cash to spend upwards of fifty pounds to go watch total crap or a rehash of a film i saw ten years ago and so many of the movies that come out these days are great on hype and lousy on decent viewing. Same as my pc games if they are good and worthwhile i buy them legitimately but again there are so many released that are just copys of one type but might have a couple of new guns that i cannot afford 25 pounds for everyone of them released. Bottom line if they make quality and support it then i am happy to support them with my money and given we all have to earn our money is it really that unfair to expect them to earn our money in return for quality i don't think so.

IceHappy avatarHay guess I keep hearing what we do that effects these turkeys and cannot wait for the next story... Corn prices are going up because of biofuels use of corn which knock on effects is more expensive chicken and beef products. I have always worried about theater popcorn when they replaced proper butter for "buttery flavor". That stuff cannot be good for you so my excuse for downloading is to eat healthier popcorn at home. Also when my other half needs the lady room I can pause my HTPC whilst she has a relaxing break without fear of missing the important part of the movie. So I blame the greedy popcorn vendor who tried to poison me in the cinemas and besides all the salt I make Kettle Corn :) LMFAO wot will be the next story blaming us I wait with baited breath and a star and two points for predictions in this thread:)!
