Dutch anti-piracy outfit is working hard and fast, accounting for 5 Usenet indexers, 1 FTP summit website and 422 unauthorized sites closed so far this year – the number which the IFPI, RIAA, and MPAA altogether will never reach.

Federal government attracts the attention of the entire world with its recent “Operation In Our Sites”. Meanwhile, it’s a Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN who’s now hurting online piracy most. The Federal officials managed to seize only 9 domain names within their campaign, while BREIN has managed to close down over 400 unauthorized sites, most of them being BitTorrent tracker websites and about 30 Cyberlockers. Altogether, BREIN says it removed about 30,000 unauthorized files from the web. In addition, it shut down 5 Usenet indexers, 1 FTP summit website and 6 streaming websites.

The only strange thing behind such a great success is that despite of the successful shutter of such a huge number of websites (especially 384 of the BitTorrent trackers) it looks like nobody has noticed their vanishing and nobody cared. In general, the business of peer-to-peer is going on quite undisturbed.

Then what is going on with this trend? The head of BREIN, Tim Kuik, wisely doesn’t want to disclose all the information and give BREIN’s targets extra popularity and traffic, but he is still willing to discuss the process of fighting piracy. Tim Kuik explains that in most cases the take down is done via the hosting provider. BREIN also obtains personal details from the providers, but it rarely helps – usually such websites are registered under a false identity. Anti-piracy outfit follows the site owners even if they change to another provider – it will contact the new one, too. If the group fails to shut down a website through hosting provider, it goes for blocking it by access provider. By the way, there’s currently one court case pending on that issue.

Actually, with over 400 infringing websites down for 6 months and almost the same time left on the clock till the end of the year, BREIN seems to achieve the results that the US government, and MPAA, the RIAA, and IFPI altogether have been unable to do. The only sad thing about this closing more than a handful of illegal sites is that it has almost no impact on the piracy, as nobody has really noticed all those sites’ closure.

ETrocks avatarI don't want to say that copyright laws are meaningless, but when they simply cannot be upheld the law should update itself.
This sort of cleansing of the internet is both ineffective and silly.

Brein is looking like a demented Don Quixote: 400 unknown windmills down.
Kwazillions to go.
Hundreds of new ones popping up each day.
Wow!
No one in his right mind would boast in the press about that.

I hope his bosses start realising that.
But they will propably be thrilled being the best of the class in upholding outdated laws.

dance4283 avatarI've used a few other sites in the past until i lucked up on Extratorrent. It is by far the best ever. It fills all my needs. It's a shame that sharing files can cause so much uproar. Thanks for all you do.
