The recent story of Jessi Slaughter has reached Australia, and perhaps, not for the right reasons. One professor taking the story argues for online censorship, declaring that users just can’t have free access to the web. So current things can look quite desperate for people supporting obligatory ISP Internet filter.
The story started with an American girl Jessi Slaughter, which is reported to apparently post the video on YouTube, where she said she was much better than others. The video then quickly spread to other websites like 4Chan and fell victim to a group of Internet trolls who decided to cyber bully the girl. Slaughter’s personal details somehow got posted online and the girl started to receive prank phone calls and other things. It came to even her parents getting involved with a video response aimed to attack trolls, but this only worsened the things. Finally the girl found herself in a police safe house with an investigation being in progress.
For many world’s observes, this story was just a lesson saying that parents should keep an eye on their kid’s Internet activity. However, Australia didn’t join that team and viewed the matter from a different perspective. Instead, the case was considered just perfect reason for obligatory Internet filtering, as one professor is concerned.
When talking about mandatory ISP filtering regime, Matt Warren, a professor of Deakin University’s School of Information Systems, argued that the Internet should be controlled and censored. Moreover, users have to be held liable for their actions there. The professor points out that as soon as the government punishes people who drink and people who speed, it should also introduce laws of the same nature regarding the Internet. Bringing the Jessi Slaughter’s story as an example, he shows that 11-year-old kids are not ethically aware of their actions online. As for the parents, they can’t train their kids how to use the Internet properly, because they do not understand it either. Since this moment, the govt should intervene with implementing a filter.
It’s still not clear why Warren is only talking of actions online, but not in the real life. What would he suggest if Slaughter didn’t post the video online but went to the real school yard and tell the same over there? Would he suggest schools to separate all the kids to prevent a conflict?

i seen her stoopit rants!!!! talk about annoying, she's quoting lines from rap songs and everyone is acting like its a big deal, "i'll put a nine to your head and make a brain slushy" and then her dad in the background talking shyt too. i mean c'mon. it's obvious this family shouldn't have a computer in there home. everyone knows, if you act retarded on youtube, people r gonna talk shyt...which is what happend. then she kept goin', they kept calling her names, people who new her posted her info blah blah!!!! change your number, then keep your kid off the internet.....she can't handle being on it. don't blame the idiots harassing her when you were all acting like idiots yourself. SCREW THE FILTER!!!! make people take an I.Q test b4 purchasing a pc......1. what color is sky? 2. how old r u? 3. if you call people out and say you're better, will they believe you or run you in the ground?
on top of what i said....she had her parents convinced she was trying out for american idol and america's got talent. and that was what she was doing. lol....if i walk in on m son and all of a sudden i hear the mouse clicking like crazy him "X"ing everything so i can't see and i ask..."what r u doing son?" and he replies, trying out for america's got talent, it's gonna through flags up and common sense will take over. they want to filter the internet, when computer manufacturers give you tools already installed on your pc to filter content.....teach them how to use that. i got them set on the pc my son uses, along with keyloggers and RATS, i know what's goin' on whenever i want to check in on him, its not rocket science trying to figure out how to protect your kids....even if its from themselves.

well said 4uck....thats the problem though isn't it parents are seemingly taking less and less responsibility for the raising and education of their kids and yet they dont mind raising holy hell with people that end up having to do it when they dont like or appreciate their methods or techniques.
This problem is so much broader and more expansive than the internet and whether filters should be implemented. When people cant provide a logical rational explanation for taking an action they manufacture and create excuses, they instill fear and spout all kinds of narrow minded rhetoric.
Thanks for the read SaM
