After its successful suggestion to host the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker on the country’s Parliament servers, the Pirate Party is now offering the same safe haven to whistleblower website WikiLeaks, promising it both bandwidth and server space in case it’s attacked as well.
Anna Troberg, the leader of Swedish Pirate Party, doesn’t fear to put her party at the forefront of online war over free speech. The news is that the Pirate Party is looking ahead, deciding to offer a whistleblower site WikiLeaks its help with bandwidth and server space in case it’s also attacked like it happened to The Pirate Bay.
At the moment Wikileaks is hosted with the Swedish company PRQ, operated by the Pirate Bay profiles – Fredrik Neij and Gottfrid Svartholm, known for being co-founders of the BitTorrent site who got banned from running it. Perhaps it’s one of the reasons why Wikileaks is now under permanent attack. It wouldn’t be a surprise for anyone if the country is shortly subjected to American pressure to close Wikileaks. As they have been doing the same towards The Pirate Bay, it must be just a matter of time before the site is attacked.
It will now be up to the Swedish government – whether it chooses to stand up on democracy and Wikileaks, or give way for the United States and go after the PRQ and the website.
WikiLeaks, as you might remember, is renowned for release of 91,000 American military documents containing secret data about the war in Afghanistan. The service believes that in a free country access to information, especially that the government doesn’t want citizens to have, is extremely important for people to be able to make a really informed decision before voting. Anna Troberg highlights that WikiLeaks is just a new way to distribute information, in addition to traditional methods like newspapers or TV, but WikiLeaks is different because it doesn’t need to hire editors with iron nerves to report any major revelations. The service doesn’t work under the same limitations as compared to traditional media, but rather treats truth more seriously.
The offer made by the Pirate Party of Sweden to WikiLeaks is following its efforts to keep data free of government censors. Last month the Party launched its own service provider named Pirate ISP and began offering bandwidth to the BitTorrent tracker from inside the Parliament, claiming its major principle to be anonymity of file-sharers traffic.

I will tell you this; releasing classified Government documents will get you nothing but prison time and it has nothing to do with freedom of speech.
You now have USA Top Secret documents in a foreign government location NOT THE USA.
Now before you rumps rangers start to foam at the mouth I am for freedom of speech; but that doesn't include screaming FIRE in a movie theater and claim "Freedom Of Speech" to do it.
Government do allot of sneaky and dirty things - ALL GOVERNMENTS; but to release information and get people killed is another.
It has nothing to do about either Swedish government – whether it chooses to stand up on democracy and Wikileaks, or give way for the United States and go after the PRQ and the website.
This is way way different than dealing with the RIAA and MPAA - you are now in the area of " National Security" and believe me you naive little ones; anything goes when THAT is used.
I believe you will see an end to wikkileads and anyone connect to it.
People are now being arrested and charged for deliberate release of "Top Secret" documents.
Remember Julius and Ethel Rosenberg?
Most likely not. They were the couple that released nuclear secrets to the Soviets and gave the Soviets a big boost in nuclear weapons. What did they get for their "freedom Of Speech"?

This one has got me thinking..I also am a strong believer in free speech and never thought of myself a free speech-er to a point, but if free speech is going to infringe on someones safety or life than maybe I have to re-think my beliefs. When you apply for you passport you are signing a document that is also a non-disclosure agreement..(treason for leaking government secrets(spying)) and have to live with the consequences of your actions. If a person from another country finds and uploads the information, it is a completely different situation....
Well I'm still thinking on this one. I have to admit it has got me stumped.

@menahunie I do not agree with you. If you live in a real democracy your government, who are your employee, should tell you everything even if it's not the thing you expect to hear. Because when it's time to vote you know all the facts and you can choose freely. But if you live in a country where they hide the important things from it's citizen you no longer live in an democracy but in an dictatorship. You say that revealing those information would kill many U.S. soldiers but isn't even wronger the killing of innocent civilians that have been carried by the U.S. troops? Is it not wrong to continue a policy that didn't work in the past and just killed a lot of innocent people? But now with this documents the U.S. is forced to change their policy and by doing so they may save many innocent lives and hopefully win the war once and for all. In my opinion your country and your president has became exactly like the president in Douglas Adams's "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", he does not have the power he merely distract the attention from those who really have it. Your country along with many others so called democracies are no longer a democracy, and that pisses you off. Thats why you can't stand to see the few remaining real democracies and you wish to destroy them. Shame on you!!!!!!
weupace - since you are a counter strike game nut and file posts in Romainia; what is it to you that makes you a "Freedom Of Speech" expert?
The " Classified" documents released have nothing to do with what you post about killings; either side... The people in Afganistan, IRAQ, Iran, and many more " Middle Eastern" Countries have been murdering each other for thousands of years. What you and allot of people ignore or just too stupid is all the killings STILL GOING ON TODAY NOT EVEN RELATED to ANY of the countries involved there.
You are either too naive or stupid to even think releasing these doucuments will change anything except more people will die.
WTF as an example to the Hitch Hiker Guide to the Galaxy has anything to do with reality. My President? I did not pick him nor the assholes running things; BUT THAT IS A DEMOCRACY..
Are you telling use YOUR GOVERNMENT DOES NOT HIDE ANYTHING FROM YOU? Yea Right.
The point is I have been around I have seen what these "innocents" do to each other and people "not like them". Saw off their heads slowing while they scream in pure agony and worse..
The bottom to all this and the the article is a line has been crossed; this is not screwing with the RIAA and or the MPAA or what ever; a Government is now involved and National Security is now involved.
You do something like what these idiots have done - they are now paying for it in arrests, and much more.
All this has done is given the Swedish Government all the legal Probable cause to shut down this ISP and anyone connected to them.
I won't be long before the men in black come knocking..... Then you can scream about "Freedom Of Speech" all you want while being dragged off in hand cuffs; if you don't just disappear..
same old arguements....usa haters v usa lovers.....well im a one world nutcase...sooner the better if u ask....no countries=no wars..........

I do, I'm an old man.

Just because we have the right to publish something doesn't always mean we should. Most actions have repercussions. It's up to the individual to decide to print, and some people have poor taste.
It's war....and civilians will die that's just a fact of war. To think U.S. soldiers are supposed to be careful of who they shoot at and look twice before they shoot.
With that kind of strategy, they will surely lose.
this has nothing to do with free speech, these are classified documents that got leaked, and the person directly responsible for the leak should pay. other than that its a done deal, Pandora's box is open. The only thing i see happening is a covert mission to the Swedish parliament and take out the wikileaks servers, but as we all know in the digital age these documents are everywhere now. so the fed is SOL. People keep your documents safe.
I think a website offering safe haven to whistleblowers can't be related to spys and trading nuclear documents etc. Or said to be causing people to die as Menahunie insinuated. THE ONLY purpose of whistleblowing is HUMANE honest GOOD etc. Its following your conscience and heart and trying to stop a bad, evil injust thing etc. Obviously the people involved aren't ignorant about dangers from pissing off the powers that be. Likely their morals are to high to put their own safety above their ideals for a better world.
rebornawareness - your avator completely explains your mind set; go back rubbing you man titties....
Releasing Top Secret documents isn't being a whistle blower let alone putting it up for the enemy to see.
Documents that most likely have Iraq's and others helping the western forces now facing or being killed in horrible ways using power drills as a minimum.
The world is dealing with a animalistic group of people who worship death and death to anyone not like them. These people bury women up to their waist in the ground and throw rocks at them until they are dead; their women running to the ends of the earth only to be tracked down and killed - Honor Killing for alledged disgrace to the family; people who think nothing of killing you and I because we are not like them.
Just think they are cowards and convince mind dead people like you to blow themselves up in stores, theaters, restaurants, disco's, buses, trains and more. Hell they would think nothing of wiping out a whole city..
How would you like it some crumb sitting on the same airplane at 40 thousand feet is shouting " Allah AcAbar" while trying to light a bomb? While you are on the same plane?
YOU DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO THIS CRUMB OR THE PEOPLE LIKE HIM; SO WHY IS AND THEY TRYING SO HARD TO KILL YOU? BECAUSE YOU ARE AN INFIDEL THAT IS THE ONLY REASON..
Comments made by people like you only show your ignorance to the REAL WORLD. I suggest you keep you mouth shut; travel the world and see what is really going on; THEN you have a right to comment..

|Am I the only one who thinks it's amusing that menahunie actually googled weupace? I mean really... what's the point in that? Just so you can try to rationalize and justify profiling a person that's from a 3rd world country and plays video games? You're an idiot, point blank - flaming people because of a difference of opinion... who do you think you are to tell someone that they don't have the right to make a comment? Seriously, who gave you that almighty power to make those decisions based on what's lingering around in that head of yours like the stench of a dead skunk. I've been around the world, lived around the world, and mostly the states - and honestly, I can't stand the american gov and it's so called democracy for what it does to its own people and the ones they can benefit from. The US seems to think of itself like the international police - the new world order even. They apply their laws across continents through immigration loopholes and other homeland security bullshit caused by 9/11 and try to govern other countries that have absolutely nothing to do with them. Wtf are we doing in Iraq anyway? Has everyone forgotten that it was Afghanistan where we were suppose to originally go and not in Iraq looking for oil instead of Osama. Trying to stop a holy war that's been going on for longer than the entire history of the US is useless, it's none of our business - sure it's wrong and unethical, but who cares, it's not our battle. I do agree though, releasing top secret documents will get the person nothing but jail or worse - it's a fact - it's not freedom of speech related, it's utter stupidity.||
