When the guy named Shane Comegys was 16, he had two favorite things in his life: unauthorized downloaded music tracks and his Mustang. If he was given the choice, he would happily choose the Mustang and remove the music. However, the lawyers of the music industry didn't give him any choice – they took both.
Shane used to have the classic muscle car, a 1970 Mustang Coupe, looking great. Though it smoked and had some holes in the floor, it could be great after a bit of work. However, it turned out it didn’t worth even Shane’s collection of about 2,000 illegally downloaded music tracks of such musicians as Beck.
While Shane was downloading his collection via popular file-sharing service Kazaa, he never thought how it can later affect his precious possession until a thick envelope arrived from a law company representing the RIAA. The content of the letter was simple and written in terse: it said that the guy now had two choices. The first one was to write the record company a check for $4,250. The second was to go to the court and be sued for damages of $750 per each piece of work, which amounted to $1.5 million. In other words, Shane now inevitably owed to the RIAA.
When the guy’s family addressed a lawyer with their problem, he couldn’t comfort them, but said that they were in a big trouble. The second choice (the trial) was 100% no-win, even though the RIAA didn’t need those $1.5 million, but rather an example of the convicted file-sharer. The statistics he showed said that most cases were settled for less than $5,000.
The Comegys realized they didn't have much of a choice, but nor they had that much money. However, they decided to settle and Shane now had only 4 months to earn the cash. Finally, he managed to make only about $2,000 from his after-school job at a local store. This left him no other choice than to put his Mustang on eBay at an extremely reduced price of $2,500. The car, of course, sold within the next two hours and the man who bought it called a few weeks later to inform he resold it for $8,000.
Unfortunately, Shane is not alone in his case. The RIAA has sued around 28,000 individuals, some of which were innocent. Considering the tactics employed by the industry and the age of the targets, most of those cases were settled at the same personal cost as Shane’s.

well the government are running scared OR it`s big handouts for the boys long live usa freedom
Again it boils down to the "lawyer's"; their lawyer told them they are screwed even when the RIAA had not presented "hard" documented proof a violation did in fact happened; just an allegation..
A little story.
Some one I know went through a divorce.
They both went to lawyer's and were told both it will cost around 20,000 each to represent each of them. My friend was going crazy about where to get that kind of money. He asked me what should he do? I gave him my opinion. Just use the lawyer if you have to for legal advice when and only if needed. Why? because why pay some one money when YOU are the one who will have to make the desissions NOT THE LAWYER.
I also gave him my opinion tell his soon to be ex to write down on paper what she wanted. She did. Then he would make a check as to what she would get; he checked off everything. She was very suspicicious he told you want it you got it.
He's doing great and after a few years is doing great financially; guess who wanted to come back? yep... He said H*ll no.
What the point of all this is I HATE LAWYERS. They are parasites and suck the life financially out of you and don't provide a real service. They created this "legal" system we have and they go on to be politicians to create more stupid laws for this circus we are stuck in.
That's why some people I know keep their "files" on external drives in a degaussing box; throw a switch hmmmm nothing all gone and the drives are sizziling.. Computer a shredder destruct set up when and if it's needed.
Since these people can not reach the "real" pirates like the commercial one's in China; all they can do is screw around wiht the people they can reach - you and I.
Here is my opinion on the topic:
Its a scare campaigne, they cant catch the "big fish" uploading the files, so they are going to war agaiinst the regulary downloader.
thoese people that dosnt hide behind vpn, dark/use-net, proxy etc. this is much easier they think if the regulary guy stops downloading, they will stop uploading, or at least conor the rest of us.. :/
#3....its harder to convict someone for uploading being as they most likely paid for and own the copy they share. i'm not saying that is the case all the time. but it isn't considered "copied" until it has been placed on the other persons computer. as for the "scare campaigne" you're absolutely right....hence the ages of the people they tend to go after, teenagers and people who have no idea what they are doing. its also easier to go after the kids parents who are gonna want to settle out of court to make it go away (because they had no idea what was going on, and only see $ signs), leaving the kid to be grounded, than to go after the people who potentially have money and would say "why would i DL it when i got the money to pay for it?"....bottom line, its a joke...the people who are getting falsely accused need to bring a mass litigation against the industry for pain and suffering or costs for having to pay for lawyers and give them a taste of there own medicine.
