The founder of Kartel.ro, a Romanian BitTorrent tracker website, became the first person in Romania to get a jail sentence for his operations. After the Business Software Alliance has made complaints about the site’s operations, Kartel.ro was closed three years ago. However, it took as much as 3 years to bring this case to its final conclusion, which appeared to be a six months suspended sentence and a fine.
Today the Romanian division of the Business Software Alliance celebrates another success from its efforts on shutting down the illegal software. One of the landmark cases of commercial piracy has just come to the conclusion, favoring the Alliance.
Back three years ago, the Romanian BitTorrent tracker was closed down as the result of the complaints coming from the BSA. The Alliance claimed the site was facilitating the distribution of content to which its members owned the copyrights. Instead of pursuing the case through the civil courts, the BSA and the Romanian state decided to bring a criminal action against the website’s founder. The resulting trial was waited for for 3 years and concluded in this past June with the site’s owner’s conviction. In October the appeal of that case was heard, but the country’s Court of Appeal upheld the previous decision, handing down a six month suspended jail sentence to the site’s owner. Besides, he is also forced to pay an unspecified compensation to copyright owners.
Chief Prosecutor from the country’s IP Department states that making the content protected by copyright available to the public is a crime. Digital piracy is a plague affecting the state as much as the copyright owners. Although the legislation provides protection to that content, it can’t be perceived as a protection of authors only. Instead, it’s a vital factor for economic growth, since IT has fundamental importance for the society.
However, the comments of the IP Department seem very contradictory when compared to the words of Romanian President, who told Bill Gates back in 2007, just before the shutdown of the tracker, that piracy helped Romanian young generation discover computers and improve their creative capacity in the information technology industry. The latter, by the way, has become famous all over the globe. In other words, pirated software determined the country’s flourishing IT sector!

Nice InFo Thanks!
of course these things help, but the corporations are not making the profit from helping people.
way long time ago a friend gave me his copy of office and i learned how to use it, later in my work i was required to know how to use it but they never gave us any training, so how in the world are people supposed to learn things that can not afford them and cant get training but are required to know how to use it?
we are lucky there is openoffice.org that gives us a compatible office suite for free.
the regular person shouldnt have to buy that stuff, only the corporations should have to buy it, since they are the ones making money by using it.
but it seems the only place people get a break on the price is in asia where they dont make any money, some companies finally woke up to the fact that not everyone makes the same income as in the US.
its true..im romanian and i must say i never payd a cent for software other than games....and i can proudly say i learned 99'9% of what i know about various softwares cuz i had pirate copy's pf those softwares and i learned by myself how to use them
Well, the statement is true... and more... piracy also created for the new generation a dependence (as in "addiction"... as in "lack of alternatives") on pirated software .... Persons using a computer for more than 5 years are asking "Linux? What's this?"
At a national level... Microsoft is the most pirated software company .... but the Microsoft Romanian representative was the best seller in Europe... :)
