ICE office of Homeland Security Investigations has recently carried out the raids that resulted in the seizure of more than seventy domains online. However, just hours after the domains had been seized, some of the sites already appeared online again.
The spokesperson for the ICE office of Homeland Security Investigations announced that it executed court-ordered seizure warrants against several domains, but she never added any details, explaining that this was still an ongoing investigation. Nevertheless, even without those details it can be seen that the seizure is meant to show that the government is free to close down sites they deem to be unauthorized.
However, the ICE only seized domains, but never closed the websites themselves. In fact, typing in a URL is only a convenient way to access the site, as it can be easy to remember. This name (domain) points visitors to a server which is usually an IP address. So, after the raids those visitors who type in URL which was seized are forwarded to another server, which says them that the domain was seized. Meanwhile, the website itself is still in-tact, but can’t be reached from that specific URL. For some of the site owners that fact is only a minor nuisance. For example, RMX4U website, specializing in black music, is already back online and can be reached by typing in remix-blog.com. And it’s not alone – a few hours after the domains seizure, the websites are coming back.
Now, when the ICE withholds comments, it’s hard to say if it is planning to take any other action, but at the moment its attempts of executing those seizures don’t seem to do a good job at fighting the illegal file-sharing or whatever the authorities are fighting against.
