A group of major file-sharing websites have voluntarily made themselves inaccessible to protest against the forthcoming adoption of new law. The websites generating up to 70% of the country’s web traffic are going to display a black page saying that if the so-called Sinde Act is approved soon, their services could go offline forever. Meanwhile, cables published by Wikileaks revealed that the country had bowed to pressure of America to implement the new legislation.
Spanish courts have ruled repeatedly over the last time that due to some conditions, operating a file-sharing service is legal. However, recent leaks of diplomatic cables published by Wikileaks revealed that the Spanish Government, under pressure from the US, proposed new law in order to close those “loopholes”.
New legislation, called the Sustainable Economy Law (LES), can be approved this week in Spain. If it did, it will pose a great problem to many file-sharing services. Although the law, popularly known as the Sinde Act, has been actively protested, it still could be fully adopted in a couple months.
The new legislation will stipulate the creation of a Commission on Intellectual Property, which would have the power to address the complaints against sites linking to copyright files like software, movies, or music, including blocking the services or taking them offline.
Unsurprisingly, the opposition to the passing of the law is rapidly growing, and one of the reasons may be the decision by Congress to approve the SEL in a single meeting. Despite the fact that the bill will pass to the Senate, Congress will still be able to ignore any of its amendments.
To express their objection, many Spanish file-sharing services are going to protest by voluntarily going offline. Each of the websites is going to show the explaining message and link to anti-censorship website called No al Cierre de Webs.
According to some estimation, in total all those websites having millions of page views are responsible for up to 70% of Spanish web traffic. Still, the new legislation could take them offline at once. After the copyright owners complain to the Commission on Intellectual Property, the status of the website in question would be reviewed by a court. The latter would then be demanded to take action within four days.

|Yanks are responsible for half the crap that goes on in the world not just sharing laws, but wars as well. Seems to be a case of if it doesn't fit in with what the "good old US of A" wants then they apply pressure to get it changed and if the can't get it changed they either invade or pretend it doesn't apply to them (kyoto agreement) having only recently been overtaken by China as the biggest polluter in the world I'm sure the yanks are trying hard to regain that number one spot.|
As to the article, I can't see how the going offline is a protest .. since when have any goverment listened to the people who put them in power.
|Good that at least SOME of this idiotic legislation is gone. As 'free' citizens in the 'free' world, we should all be extremely concerned about the subversive and politicised interests of VERY RICH companies, in fact some of the WEALTHIEST companies in the world. We have to remember we are under DIRECT THREAT from both large or massive corporations and corporate led government. These companies and their senior directors have NO LOVE WHATSOEVER FOR ORDINARY OR POOR PEOPLE. F*** MONEY! SHARE LOVE! SHARE WHATEVER YOU CAN! BE COMPLETELY YOURSELF - NEVER MIND F*** HEADED CORRUPT GOVERNMENTS OR CORRUPT CORPORATIONS!!!!||
