Rightscorp Destroyed Its Piracy Tracking Code
Cox Communications has asked a Virginia federal court to dismiss the copyright infringement lawsuit launched by the music labels back in 2014. The case in question relied on evidence gathered by piracy tracking firm Rightscorp, but now the ISP claims that the latter is unusable after the anti-piracy firm destroyed its older versions of the piracy tracking code.
MPAA Shuts Down YIFY, YTS Demonii and Popcorn Time
The story started with a huge global piracy website that appeared to be run from Auckland. According to the MPAA, the operator of YTS and the associated outfit YIFY was the subject of a multi-million lawsuit lodged with the High Court on October 12. To the surprise of many, it turned out that Kim Dotcom is not the only copyright infringer of a huge scale in New Zealand. The Mt Wellington house reportedly was the base for one of the world's most prolific groups involved in the illegal replication of copyrighted content distributing more than 4 500 infringing movie titles on the Internet.
UK Police Right to Access Browsing History Can Be Blocked
According to the recent news, peers could derail plans to grant police power to potentially access the online browsing records of any UK user. Apparently, the upper chamber has been emboldened after peers voted to delay proposed cuts to tax credits even despite the fact that the law in question had already been passed by the House of Commons.
Anonymous Denied Involvement in Ku Klux Klan Data Leak
The well-known hacktivist group has denied involvement in a data-dump that incorrectly outed a number of politicians as being members of the Ku Klux Klan. A week ago, Anonymous claimed online that it had obtained a list of names of KKK members via a hacked Klan-linked Twitter account. The hackers pledged to release the names, but this announcement was followed by someone claiming affiliation with the group publishing names on Pastebin, which was quickly discredited.
British Surveillance Measures Unveiled
Theresa May has unveiled the provisions of the draft investigatory powers bill, saying that new surveillance powers will be granted to the police and security services. Such powers would allow them to access records tracking everyone’s use of the web without any judicial check.
The Third Suspect in TalkTalk Case Arrested
Another person has been arrested in the investigation of the hacking attack against the UK telecoms giant TalkTalk. A 20-year-old man is being held on suspicion of offences under the Computer Misuse Act and remains in custody at the UK police station
Another UK Telecoms Giant Hacked
Vodafone recently announced that hackers might have accessed the bank details of about 2,000 customers. The mobile phone provider said that over 1,800 accounts were accessed, which could disclose criminals the subscribers’ names, mobile numbers, bank sort codes and the last 4 digits of their bank accounts.
RIAA Demanded Damages From Reincarnated Grooveshark
The Recording Industry Association of America asked a federal court to issue a default judgment against the newly emerged clone of the defunct Grooveshark music service. The music industry is asking for more than $13 million in piracy damages and $4 million for willful counterfeiting.
YIFY and YTS Are Gone Forever
Unfortunately, it recently became known that popular torrent release group YIFY and its official YTS site have gone offline forever. It was just a couple weeks ago that the popular movie torrent website YTS became inaccessible. This outage raised concern among many users, partly due to the fact that the website belongs to movie release group YIFY, extremely popular among public BitTorrent service for many years.
