This is intended for newbees to tell them what exactly a torrent is and how to use it.
Say I have a file (Movie, song, etc) I want to share with others. If It is only me uploading it it could tie up my PC for weeks or months and still not get to many people.
First we had things like the Gnutella file sharing network, the least said about that piece of crap the better. It's riddled with crap and files pretending to be things they arn't. Oh yes, lots of viruses to.
Along came Bram Choen and invented Bittorrent and the entire internet turned upside down. Here's how it works.
Say I have a 1gb movie I want to share. First I download a programme called Make Torrent 2 and use this to make the torrent file.
The torrent file will be around 10kb. It will have indexed the movie into around 1000 1Kb chunks. Let's say the chunks are numbered 1 to 1000. The torrent file is not the movie, it's an index, nothing else.
Next make a couple of screen captures and write a short but good discription of the movie: Include:
What viewer/codec you use to view it
Any thing else you can think off.
Next I choose a tracker, these belong to the Bit Torrent sites, lots of them around, just google for Bittorrent tracker. You'll probably have to join the site to use it but it's free. Most trackers are attached to specific torrent sites so any file you upload to it can only be downloaded by that sites members.
Upload the torrent you created along with the screen shots and discription. Don't worry' it's easy.
After this you usually have to delete the torrent you made and download the torrent from the site, it's to do with keys and anti piracy.
Then you leave your internet connection open and wait.
Before I go any further. There's quite often a problem with closed ports and firewalls. I'm not going to say any more about these here but if you can't download the movie or classicaly, the download starts and quickly stops you've got a problem. If you need help with this ask and I'll try and help.
In order to use the torrent file you need a bit torrent agent. I use Bittornado, others use Azures or ABC, use what you like apart from Bitcomet, it's crap. You just download the programme and run it once. It'll lurk in the background minding it's own business untill you click on a .torrent file.
OK so you come along, see the torrent, read the discription and decide to download it.
You download the torrent and run it. It contacts my PC and asks for the file, This is complicated but stick with me.
What you get is bit 1. Fred does the same but he gets bit 2. Tom gets 3.
You will not get any more from me unless my torrent file sees bit 1 on either Tom or Fred's PC. Once it sees it it knows you're sharing and gives you bit 4. It does the same with Tom and fred.
So. I've uploaded 3 1kb bits to each of 3 people. Each of these have shared their bits with 2 other people so in efect there's now 9kb of the file up there. Sure it's only the original 3k, but there are 3 copies of it.
If you don't share you get no more from me. You may get it from one of the others but it will be slow.
So along comes Dick and starts downloading. He gets 4 bits at once, 1 from each of us. In the meantime you're, hopefully all downloading and sharing other bits. People downloading are usually called leeches because they are leeching the file from each other.
So the more people downloading the file the faster each individual download will happen. If there 1 1 person leeching, with a speed of 1 kb/min, it will take 1000,000 mins to download the movie. If there are 100 people it will take 10,000 mins, 1,000 people will get it in 1,000 mins.
For various reasons I will have to upload more than the original 1gb. Usually around 1.2gb. This is because some of the bits will have been corrupted in transmission, some people will not be sharing and some people will stop the upload before it finishes.
Once several people have got the entire thing I can drop out and leave them to seed it, as that's what they now are, seeds.
If no one seeds I either give up in disgust leaving those people with a partial download up the creek or leave my PC tied up in the hope of a good samaratin comming along.
Now here's the good bit. Say you get the movie and it's not as advertised, it's a piece of crap, it's spam, it's passworded. You post a comment warning others. Those downloading it should stop. No one else will start and, in efect the torrent will die.
So if I upload crap I'll only annoy a few people. If I do it seveeral times the admin staff will get rather annoyed and bann me. So people usually don't post crap.
I'know this isn't easy to follow. I've been using Torrents a long time and know what they're about and how to use them. They're a brill system so long as they're not abused.
Just have a go. You'll soon get the hang of it.
